SEA CLIFF CIVIC ASSOCIATION PRESENTS PRESTIGIOUS WHITE CAP AWARDS TO TERRY SCIUBBA AND DEBBIE PIERCE

Picture
June 12, 2014 -- Sea Cliff residents Terry Sciubba and Debbie Pierce are the recipients of this year's White Cap Awards. The prestigious honor is bestowed by the Sea Cliff Civic Association each year to individuals, groups or organizations that have demonstrated repeated outstanding volunteer service to the Sea Cliff community.  The Metropolitan Bistro, which generously contributed an extensive assortment of hors d'oeurves, hosted the award ceremony this past Tuesday evening, that was attended by dozens of Sea Cliff residents.  No one, other than those on the selection committee, knew who the recipients would be until Phil Como,  who received the honor in 1996, read to the audience a letter, signed by two dozen residents, nominating Terry Sciubba for the award.  After Sea Cliff Civic Association President Ann DiPietro presented Ms. Sciubba with a White Cap medal, 2007 recipient Janette Heurtley addressed the audience, describing the contributions of one particular Sea Cliff resident, waiting until the very end of her speech to identify that individual as Debbie Pierce.  Mr. Como's and Ms. Heurtly's statements are below.

PHIL COMO'S ADDRESS ON BEHALF OF TERRY SCIUBBA

We would like to nominate Terry Sciubba for the 2014 award of the Whitecap

Terry has been a resident of Sea Cliff and business owner for many years and, after successfully raising her family of three children, she turned her attention to her business, Sherlock Homes Realty, and her varied volunteer pursuits.

For 20 years, under her personal direction, Terry has hosted an annual Christmas Dinner at the Methodist Church for residents who have had a personal appreciation for someone who would take of their own time, talent and treasure to provide warm and friendly holiday venue for so many-who might otherwise have had a less than happy holiday.

Additionally, Terry has been a driving force in support of Mutual Concerns, particularly in its Holiday House Tour, annually providing her office and phones in support of this very important and successful event; she has gone the extra mile each year doing whatever tasked to make sure of the event's success.

Terry as also been an active member of the Sea Cliff Beach Committee and a founding officer of the revitalized Sea Cliff Business Coalition.  On a very regular basis, terry has shown her support of several village groups in their fundraising efforts.  She opens her office for ticket sales and provides phone banks for their efforts of, among others, Beautification, Beach Committee, Mutual Concerns and Sea Cliff Landmarks Association.

Perhaps less well-known is her generosity to those less fortunate.  She has quietly provided money and other aid anonymously.

We feel this award is overdue-and heartily nominate Terry Sciubba for the 2014 Whitecap award.

Sincerely,

Phil Como, Peggie Como, Linda Parsons, Barbara Murray, Frank Murray, Jim Kaelin, Janette Heurtley, Joyce Kaumnn, John Reali, Jean Stratford, Joe Krupinski, Dick Hartney, Carol Hartney, Claudia Moyne, Pat Guy, Jack Guy, George Bevad, Art Hubbs, Ernie Franck, Sally Davies, Peggy Costello, Kathleen Van Bloem, Eileen Krieb, Sarah Reres

JANETTE HEURTLY'S STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF DEBBIE PIERCE

Many people make up a village, many people do good work, some for reward, some for respect, some do good without motive because it is so much their nature to do so.

This candidate is one of these.  Born in Sea Cliff, giving service has been her second nature.

Despite a full time job, marriage, children; she has spent years volunteering for the benefit of Sea Cliff.

She worked long and actively for the Fire Department.  She has sung in the Choir at Saint Lukes, made gallons of jelly, chaired the Church Bazaar, pancake supper, annual picnic and church supper.

As a Mutual Concerns committee volunteer – she has served thousands of meals cheerfully and selflessly

On the Senior Action Committee she has helped coordinate the annual senior picnic – preparing food, setting up, serving.

For whatever is a need she is the first to step forward and with a network of resources to help others.  There is no more dedicated person to the interests of Sea Cliff – a worthy recipient of the White Cap Award – Debbie Pierce
