TESTING RESOLUTION A GOOD FIRST STEP BUT CHANGE MUST BEGIN HERE AT HOMEThe North Shore School Board was right to take up a resolution at its July 1st meeting calling on State officials to reform New York’s “top-down,” “one-size fits all” high stakes standardized testing approach to education. . . . Unfortunately Albany moves slowly, and these actions will not provide immediate relief from the high stakes testing culture that has developed in this district and others. Yes –the tests and APPR are bad. Neither accurately or fairly evaluates students or teachers – especially when students are being prepped for the test. What is more harmful than the testing itself, however, is how districts have responded to it. . . . READ MORE

500 ATTEND SATURDAY MORNING RALLY TO SAVE GLEN COVE HOSPITALAugust 31 -- Approximately 500 people attended a rally early Saturday to protest the proposed decertification of beds and elimination of several departments at North Shore LIJ's Glen Cove hospital. . . . The message of the event was clear as speaker after speaker reiterated the point
that the community has to continue pressing hospital officials and government leaders to not allow North Shore LIJ's proposals for the hospital to be fully carried out, and to demand that the process take place in public view. SUMMER SEASON WINDS DOWN WITH SEA CLIFF BEACH FUN DAY AND ARTS COUNCIL FUNDRAISERSept. 1 -- . . . In the morning, it appeared as the day's scheduled events might not go on at all, as thunderclaps caused lifeguards to close the beach to swimming at around 10:30 a.m. By noon however, the water was open again, and lifeguards weighed anchor on the beach raft and pushed it ashore, bringing only a symbolic end to the season. . .
