BOE DISCUSSES SOCIAL STUDIES CHANGES AND ATHLETICS ATTENDANCE POLICY AT 10.20 MEETING

Picture
8th grader Kate Wesley-Jones receives a firm handshake from Superintendent Ed Melnick, as mom and School Board Vice President Sara Jones looks on, for being a semifinalist in the Broadcam Masters Middle School Stem Competition.  Only 300 students of the 6,000 who entered the national competition received the designation. Ms. Wesley-Jones' entry, A Graph is Worth 1,000 (Misleading?) Words, examined how truncation of the y-axis on a graph affects viewers interpretation of the results of the graph. This practice is often used by the media and in politics to mislead the viewer by misrepresenting the data or statistic being shown. Ms. Wesley-Jones also earned second place at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair for her research project.

DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE IS A SERIOUS AND GROWING ISSUE FOR OUR COMMUNITY; PARENTS URGED TO ATTEND PRESENTATION MONDAY NIGHT

The following letter was sent out to North Shore High School Parents by Principal Albert Cousins

Dear North Shore Families,

Drug and alcohol abuse is a serious and growing issue for our community. Like many communities across the region and nation we are experiencing increases in drug and alcohol use and addiction. Each year the school has worked to educate students and families, in different ways, as a means of prevention. However, when planning for this year we committed to an enhanced approach. Our primary aim is to start a conversation within families that can lead to productive and helpful actions for students who may be experiencing peer pressure or facing challenges navigating adolescence with the presence of drugs or alcohol. RE-ELECT ASSEMBLYMAN CHARLES LAVINE ON NOVEMBER 8

Received from Carol Poll, Sea Cliff
October 22, 2016

Dear Editor;

I have rave reviews for the work of New York State Assemblyman Charles Lavine.  In all my dealings with him I have found him to be an honest, forthright and perceptive strategist and advocate for his constituency.   A few examples of his outstanding work are his efforts to help military families deal with their frequent relocations by passing legislation to assist them with school transfers, college costs for veterans, and the transfer of professional licenses for military family members.  READ MORE

ASSEMBLYMAN LAVINE COMMENTS ON MANGANO AND VENDITTO ARRESTS

Received from Assemblyman Charles D. Lavine (D- 13th Assembly District)

October 20, 2016

To the Editor:

While we must bear in mind that Mr. and Mrs. Mangano and Mr. Venditto are entitled to the full benefit of the presumption of innocence, this remains a sad and troubling day for Nassau County.

At times such as this, let us remember President John F. Kennedy's admonition that it is our responsibility to ask not what our country can do for us, but, rather, what can we do for our country and for our community.

It is as well a time to question why personal greed and betrayal of the public trust became more important than loyalty to our fellow citizens.

- Assemblyman Charles Lavine

Dear Great Book Guru,   Fall has arrived here in Sea Cliff and how lovely it is! One of my favorite autumn sights is the beautiful maple tree  basking in its full red bejeweled glory behind the Children’s Library.   Amidst all this beauty, I feel the need for some serious reading.  Any recommendations?

BAT HOUSES AND BATS AND YOU

Summer and mosquitos and more summer and even more mosquitos. All the time… 24/7..day and night. Yes, the mosquitos have become unbearable. So what to do? Solutions that do not include soaking the planet in chemicals. Well, the answer lies in BATS! Native to Long Island but mostly disliked due to the fear of rabies, their creepy habit of sleeping upside down and those rather formidable black wings.  READ MORE

Exhibit will run through February 18 with regular museum hours:  Wednesday 2:00-6:00 and Saturdays 11:00-3:00.
The North Shore Votes!
The exhibit showcases a variety of political memorabilia and historic photographs that illustrate the many ways North Shore residents have participated in local, state and national politics. Political brochures, election guides and a garden of lawn signs complement the historical passages in this exhibit that extends beyond the political campaign to the citizen groups that work behind the scenes, and it also highlights the accomplishments of the many people who have answered the call to serve the community.
