SCHOOL DISTRICT LIKELY TO SEEK APPROVAL FOR BOND ISSUE IN 2017

Picture
September 8, 2016 -- At last Thursday’s public meeting, North Shore Schools Superintendent Dr. Edward Melnick recommended to the School Board that it put before voters in December 2017 a bond proposal to fund infrastructure improvements and renovations to buildings that would help support instruction - in particular upgrades that would enable the district to create “21st Century Classrooms.” He cited an upcoming drop in debt service costs and his retirement at the end of this school year, as well as the importance of maintaining and upgrading district facilities as the nature of instruction changes, as reasons for this being the appropriate time to begin the year-long process of identifying district needs and deciding what projects ultimately will be included in the proposal.  READ MORE

THE LONG HIKE TO THE SUMMIT

Picture
By Liam Kiggins
The morning of the 24th of June this year saw a group of 12 people, including scouts, troop alumni, and adults take part in a camping trip to the presidential range in the White Mountains. The mountain that was the main focus of the trip was Mount Washington, the tallest mountain in the Northeast, with an elevation of 6,298 feet. This three-day trip was designed to allow scouts to improve their skills on a trip with a much more challenging itinerary than a standard monthly campout.  READ MORE

SUPERCALIFRAGILISTIC SPECTACLE IN SEA CLIFF

Picture
For the second year in row scores of residents turned out for Cinema Under the Stars, a Sea Cliff Civic Association end of summer event that, like its Ice Cream Social, Fourth of July Celebration and Sunset Serenade concert series, has now become a village tradition.  The evening featured music by Broken System and a viewing of the family friendly film, "Mary Poppins."

"We billed this as Cinema Under the Stars but it was truly Magic Under the Stars - a magical night, a magical movie, our Village magically transformed as summer came to an end," said Civic Association President Ann DiPietro.

She gave a special thanks to "Audio Expert Extraordinaire"
Charlie Weinstein of Design Audio Visual who lent the audio-visual equipment for the evening, and returned repeatedly to monitor it throughout the night.

Organizing the event were Movie Night Committee Chairs Sarah Kaplan and Jen Ohare; Publicist Christine Abbenda and Screen Mannagers Laura and John Russo. This fall, look for more Civic Association events including the Cider Social, Headless Turkey Hunt, and the Progressive Dinner.

VOTERS APPROVE GOLD COAST LIBRARY BUDGET; RYBA, KEMPTON AND MARTIN ELECTED TO BOARD

Picture
September 8, 2016 -- On Wednesday September 7, nearly 90 residents of Glen Head, Glenwood Landing and Old Brookville turned out for the Gold Coast Public Library’s annual budget vote and trustees election and expressed strong support for the 2017 spending plan that represents an increase of less than 0.1% over the current year.  73 were in favor while 14 voted against the penny a month per resident tax increase.  Additionally, Rosemarie Ryba and Amy Kempton, the only two candidates on the ballot for three open seats were re-elected to a sixth three year term on the Library Board. David Martin, who received 14 write-in votes, earned the third spot.  Also receiving write in votes were Bill Mozer (9) and Robert Mazella (1), as well as Craig Hennenberger (1) who is currently on the board but was not seeking to continue when his term expires in January.  READ MORE
