GLEN HEAD RESIDENT AMONG THOSE HONORED BY ASSEMBLYMAN ED RA AS A WOMAN OF DISTINCTION

​On Saturday, September 26, Assemblyman Ed Ra (R-Franklin Square) hosted his 2015 Women of Distinction Ceremony. The event, which took place at the Albertson VFW Post 5253, honored women from across the 19th Assembly District for their unwavering commitment to improving their communities, families and careers.  
Among those recognized was Glen Head resident Gina Serreon, co-President of the American Legion Auxiliary, who has been a tireless advocate for Veterans - especially those who are homeless. READ MORE

SEA CLIFF'S SILLY SHAKESPEARE SOARS BY THE SEASIDE
Sea Cliff Beach was the site this past weekend of The Silly Shakespeare Company of Sea Cliff”s  frolicking interpretation of Shakespeare’s  The Tempest- a loose combination of the Bard’s original play, TV’s The Love Boat and the movie Castaway. Titled “The Tem-Pissed”  it cleverly included ukulele duets, a rousing rendition of  “ Day-0 Day-0” ,  a magnificent  Hawaiian hula dance piece,  ending with an over-the-top full cast Conga line.   Luckily, there was a running commentary by Elizabeth Sehring as Lucy Leper  and Carolyn Mazzu Genovesi as Bar Maid #1. . .

DELAY DECISION ON GARVIES POINT DEVELOPMENT UNTIL PROPER STEPS TAKEN

To the Editor:

The proposed Glen Cove waterfront redevelopment, because of its tremendous density, is not just a Glen Cove issue – it is a regional issue.  Former Mayor Tom Suozzi envisioned and proposed a true mixed use development for Garvies Point, consisting of shops, restaurants, office buildings, entertainment, and no more than 500 residential units. A planned hotel and conference center would draw visitors to Glen Cove, many via the proposed ferry.  However, now the developer seeks to eliminate a substantial portion of the mixed use and dramatically increase the residential component to 1,110 units.

To the North Shore Board of Education( NSBOE) and Superintendent Melnick for again not mentioning any holidays, holy days or days of remembrance on the 2015/2016 school calendar.

Yes, no  Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Presidents Day, Good Friday, Martin Luther King's Birthday, Memorial Day and Fourth of July. Calendar just says CLOSED. READ MORE

2015 PUMPKIN PATCH FUNDRAISER AT THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF SEA CLIFF

The pumpkin patch is back!  The Methodist Church of Sea Cliff will be hosting its 12th annual fall fundraiser from October 2 through October 31. All pumpkins are grown  in New Mexico by the Navajo Nation and shipped across the country by tractor-trailer and unloaded at the church on October 1st  with many volunteer helping hands. READ MORE

SEA CLIFF MINI MART ON SUNDAY

​The 46th Annual Sea Cliff Mini Mart will be held this Sunday, October 4 from 10:30 am to 5 pm.  In addition to the nearly 200 vendors and local shops offering their crafts and other wares for sale, plenty of good food and drink will be available at Sea Cliff restaurants and bars, and on the street. Although the forecast is for cloudy and cool weather, it should be dry.

SEA CLIFF IN THE SIXTIES OPENING THIS FRIDAY AT THE SEA CLIFF MUSEUM

     The Sea Cliff Village Museum will host a 1960s party on Friday night, October 9, 2015 to celebrate the opening of a new exhibit, Sea Cliff in the Sixties. From to 7 to 9 pm with wine, cheese and music the public is invited to wander through the clothing, art, photographs and artifacts from the Sixties.  Featuring color and black and white photos from former Sea Cliff resident photographer, Bertram W. Scholes, the times are brought to life with his photos of the streets of the village and the people of half a century ago. Put on your old bell-bottoms and fringed vests and join the museum staff for a nostalgic trip back in time.  READ MORE

VOLUNTEERS FOR WILDLIFE TO VISIT SEA CLIFF FARMERS MARKET
​

Representatives from Volunteers for Wildlife will be at the Sea Cliff Farmers Market on Saturday October 10.  The  Locust Valley-based not-for-profit is a wildlife hospital and education center that since 1982 has worked to preserve Long Island's wildlife and natural habitats through its educational programs and through its efforts to rehabilitate injured and orphaned wildlife, accepting upwards of 1,000 patients each year. The Sea Cliff Farmers Market is open for business at St. Luke's Church on Glen Avenue in Sea Cliff each Saturday from early summer to the end of October, from 9 am to 1 pm.  The market is held indoors in the Parish Hall during inclement weather.

5K WALK TO RAISE FUNDS AND AWARENES OF THOSE STRUGGLING WITH SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Outreach and The John Brower, Jr. Foundation will hold the first 5K Walk at Jones Beach State Park to raise funds and awareness of substance abuse on Long Island.  The event, organized by the parents and siblings of John Brower, Jr., who died of an opiate addiction at age 25 in 2014, will honor John's memory. It will take place on Saturday, October 10, 2015 and all proceeds from the walk will benefit the expansion and enhancement of drug and alcohol treatment and training services at Outreach, a metro New York agency dedicated to helping teens and adults fight their drug and alcohol addictions. NORTH SHORE ANGELO ANTINORI PERCUSSIONIST NAMED TO NAfME ENSEMBLE

October 1, 2015 -- Congratulations to Angelo Antinori, a senior at North Shore High School, who was selected to perform at the 2015 All-National Honor Ensembles. This is a prestigious honor ensemble and program of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). Angelo was chosen to perform as a percussionist in the Symphony Orchestra.
  "I'm honored to have been selected to play percussion in the All - National Symphony Orchestra," said Angelo, "I'd like to thank my band director David Soto and my private teacher, Steve Blutman for their help and guidance."   READ MORE

The North Shore School District proudly invites all community members and alumni to Homecoming 2015, Saturday, October 17, 2015 to celebrate the wonderful accomplishments of our students. The annual parade will begin at 11 AM at Glenwood Landing School and the exciting games and activities will directly follow.  Homecoming this year will include New! Elementary Games + MS Color War + HS Flag Football + Live Music + Free Hotdogs for Senior Citizens + Pre-Game Show+ Kindergarten Fun Run + Viking football Game + More! NORTH SHORE HIGH SCHOOL LAUNCHES WRITING CENTER

September 29, 2015 -- tudent tutors will collaborate with their peers to assist in the writing process.

On September 28, 2015, North Shore High School launched its new Writing Center under the direction of Mrs. Ritter (English Department Teacher Leader), Mrs. Devlin (English Teacher), and Dr. Kirmser (English teacher). Mrs. Ritter said, “Our new Writing Center supports writers at all levels and across all disciplines through one-on-one conferencing. The goal of the conferences is to enable students to grow as writers.”

26 STUDENTS FROM SISTER SCHOOL IN SPAIN VISIT NORTH SHORE

September 29, 2015 -- North Shore High School students in the Spanish program had the privilege of hosting exchange students from our sister-school, IES Playa San Juan, near the city of Alicante on the Costa Blanca in Spain. Twenty-six students, accompanied by their teachers, lived with North Shore families and attended the high school from September 8-22. Additionally, North Shore students hosted the Alicante children by touring them around Long Island and Manhattan, and graciously gave them a taste of what New York is like!

The North Shore Board of Education will meet on Thursday, October 8, 2015 at 7:30 PM, in Glenwood Landing School Auditorium to discuss the following agenda items: Math K-12, Security-Intralogic Solutions and District Demographics.
