THE MANY MYTHS OF THE VALUE OF STATE TESTING

Picture
 By Noah Blumenthal

As our district prepares to discuss school testing, I’d like to share a  few questions. Let me preface this by saying I am a proponent of district wide opt out. Only by not allowing any student to take the test can we stop teachers  and administrators from worrying that their evaluations will hinge on test  performance. With that in mind, here are my questions (and my answers):  READ MORE

SEA CLIFF RESIDENTS  DEBATE  PROPER ROLE OF GOVERNMENT AT  TREE ORDINANCE  MEETING

September 19 -- Nearly 50 Sea Cliff residents gathered at Village Hall on Monday night to discuss the current village tree  ordinance and offer their thoughts on whether the policy ought to be revised or eliminated altogether.

While no consensus was reached, the Town Hall meeting was a civics lesson in local democracy, as issues ranging from the NewYork State Open
Meetings Law to the

wisdom of holding  referenda in making public policy  decisions were raised. The key issue,  however, that dominated the  evening’s  discussion, was the extent to which local government ought  to be able to  limit  an  individual’s property rights in an
effort to promote the common good by protecting the “treed” character of
the  village.

NORTH SHORE SCHOOL BOARD TO TAKE UP DISTRICT'S STATE TESTING PHILOSOPHY AT THURSDAY MEETING

Picture
Updated September 22 (earlier  version posted on July 2) -- On Thursday, September 26, the North Shore Board of Education will meet in the Middle School Cafeteria at 7:30 pm to discuss the District's  philosophy in relation  to New York State standardized  assessments.  This is the third time in six years that the Board has sought to officially articulate its position on the issue.  In 2007, the Board adopted a white paper which minimized the importance of the tests and emphasized  a more authentic educational experience - the traditional philosophy of the District.  In 2010, after a recalibration of state cut-off scores and an outcry over North Shore students' perceived decline in performance, the pendulum swung towards an official policy which placed greater emphasis on test preparation.

At the July 1, 2013 special meeting, Trustee Toni Labatte asked the  full board to consider adopting a resolution stating the district’s
position on the State imposed high stakes testing policies . . . READ MORE

HOMECOMING IS COMING!
SATURDAY, SEPT. 28

Picture
On Saturday, September 28, the North Shore School District will be having its annual Homecoming.  The daylong celebration will include many events and activities.  At 9:30 a.m. community members, students and alumni will gather at Glenwood Landing School to march in a parade that will, at 10 am, begin its trek through Glenwood and Glen Head on its way to the High School.  At 10:30, just as the marchers arrive, a Carnival will be held at the high school fields, where there will be plenty of fun activities including live music and entertainment, games, inflatables, face painting and popcorn.  At 1 pm, fans will be treated to a pre-game show at the high school stadium followed by  the Varsity Football Vikings taking on the Valley Stream North Spartans.

Tickets for the Carnival can be purchased in advance at northshoreartsangels.org for $7.50, or at the door for $10.00.  The District will be providing free shuttle bus service to and from each of the three elementary schools to the high school from 8:45 am to 5 pm.
