EASEMENT APPLICATION STIRS DEBATE OVER PRIVATE USE OF VILLAGE RIGHT-OF-WAY

September 7, 2014 (updated September 10) -- Discussions over an easement application at last Tuesday's  Village Board Conference and this week's meeting raised important questions for the board and the community to consider regarding  not only when is it appropriate for the Village to grant use of a village right of way for private purposes, but also of the proper process for obtaining such approval, as well as the extent to which the village ought to enforce all right-of- way violations, no matter how small or inconsequential in nature.  READ MORE


GOLD COAST LIBRARY BUDGET PASSES OVERWHELMINGLY

On Monday, September 9, residents of the Gold Coast Public Library district approved the 2015 budget of $1,604,955.00 by a margin of 107 to 21 (83.5% approval rate).  Incumbents Tobi Kupferman and Barbara Palermo were re-elected and new comer Jennine Bernesby will join the Board of Trustees when the new term begins in January, 2015.

With the community's continued support, the Library will continue to work hard to fulfill its mission to provide an environment and opportunities for learning, recreation and personal growth for the residents of the community.

The Board of Trustees and Library staff thank the community.

9/11 REMEMBRANCE CEREMONIES IN SEA CLIFF AND AT THE HIGH SCHOOL

In remembrance of the nearly 3,000 victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, a ceremony will be held at the clock in front of the Sea Cliff Children's Libary at 9:30 am on Thursday September 11th.  Later in the day at 3 pm at North Shore High School, a recently installed 9/11 memorial will be formally unveiled and dedicated. All in the community are welcome to attend the ceremony.   


"A YEAR OF OFFBEAT ARTIFACTS" OPENS AT SEA CLIFF LIBRARY

The Sea Cliff Library hosted an opening reception for the exhibition “A Year of Offbeat Artifacts” on Sunday September 7.  Sea Cliff photographer Geri Reichgut’s photographic essay chronicles four seasons of the tag sale fundraiser that has set up shop on the village green nearly every other weekend for the past two and a half years. NORTH SHORE STUDENTS RETURN FROM SUMMER RECESS

On September 3rd, the students of the North Shore School District were warmly welcomed back by all of the principals, assistant principals, faculty, and staff. Additionally, Superintendent Dr. Edward Melnick, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, Rob Chlebicki, and Assistant Superintendent for Business, Olivia Buatsi, visited each school to wish everyone well. Best of luck in the new 2014-15 school year!

PCA'S PLAYGROUND AND POPSICLES FOR SEA CLIFF SCHOOL KINDERGARTNERS

The Sea Cliff PCA hosted its annual Playground and Popsicles mixer for both kindergartners and their parents this past Saturday morning.  Sea Cliff's ubiquitous singer/songwriter Kris Rice led the children in song and other fun activies.

GOOD NEWS FOR MUNICIPALITIES, SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND TAX PAYERS AS STATE REDUCES PENSION CONTRIBUTION RATES

September 8, 2014 -- In what will no doubt ease some pressure on municipalities and school districts, the percentage of payroll that New York State requires government employers to pay for many workers' pensions will decline significantly in fiscal year 2015-16, State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli announced this past Tuesday.  For workers enrolled in the New York State Employees Retirement System, which includes municipal workers as well as some school district employees such as custodians, nurses, teachers aides and business administrators, state mandated local government contributions will decline by nine percent – from 20.1% to 18.2% of payroll.  READ MORE

SEA CLIFF FIRE DEPARTMENT ANTIQUE CAR SHOW AND SWAP MEET THIS WEEKEND AT TAPPEN BEACH

The Sea Cliff Fire Department will be hosting its fourth annual Antique Car/Truck/Cycle Show and Swap Meet at Tappen Beach on Sunday, September 14th.  The registration fee for cars and trucks is $15 in advance and $20 the day of the show; for show cycles it is $10.

          For over a decade, The Sea Cliff Silly Shakespeare Company has performed “Shakespeare with a twist”- original, abridged and user friendly versions of William Shakespeare’s works to its audience, enabling them to grasp story lines without a full knowledge of Elizabethan English.  Children to grandparents have appeared together in our shows creating a deep sense of community spirit.   On Saturday night September 20, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. (Rain date, Sunday September 21 at 5:00 p.m.) the Sea Cliff Silly Shakespeare Company will conclude the 2014 Performing Arts Season at the Sea Cliff Beach Arts Pavilion by presenting its version of Shakespeare’s Scottish play, MacNoooo!  READ MORE


ASSEMBLYMAN, BUSINESS GROUPS TO HOST BENEFIT SCREENING OF NORTH BY NORTHWEST AT NORTH SHORE HISTORICAL MUSEUM

Glen Cove, NY – Assemblyman Charles Lavine (D-Glen Cove) in conjunction with the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce and the Glen Cove Business Improvement District, will host a showing of Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest on the film’s 55th Anniversary for the benefit of the North Shore Historical Museum. 


The event, on Saturday, September 13, will feature cocktails at 7 p.m. followed by the movie at 8 p.m. The film, which was in part filled at the Museum, the former Justices Court Building, stars Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Mason.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to bring people into the North Shore Historical Museum for an event and highlight the history behind the building itself,” said Assemblyman Lavine. “The participation of the Chamber and the BID and their members adds an element of community spirit that is vital to its success.”

"GROWING UP IN SEA CLIFF" EXHIBIT AT SEA CLIFF MUSEUM THIS FALL

On Sunday September 28 at 2pm in room C at Village Hall the Sea Cliff Village Museum's new exhibit "Growing Up in Sea Cliff" will hold its opening reception. The opening will feature readings from Village Historians and others. The museum's extensive collection of children's clothing, toys, books and artifacts will be on display. WEEKEND FUNDRAISERS AND COMMUNITY SERVICE

SPRUCING UP RUM POINT 

Members of the Glen Head Sea Cliff Lion's Club, under the direction of and with a good deal of assistance from Russel Gorog of the Sea Cliff Beautification Committee spent this past Saturday morning at Rum Point Park on Prospect Avenue planting mums and other flora that the community service organization had donated.

SWAB PARTY AT STILL PARTNERS

Penelope’s Odyssey, a nonprofit organization that raises awareness of and money for pediatric cancer research, hosted a swab party and fundraiser at Sea Cliff’s Still Partners this past Friday night.  The event offered people the opportunity to join the national bone marrow registry by having the inside of their cheeks swabbed, while being entertained by Kris Rice and Co.  

GVA ANNUAL ANTIQUES SHOW

The Sea Cliff Good of the Village Association held its annual Art and Antiques show this past Saturday raising funds for the organization that for more than a century has been serving with community with public works and events.
