CANDIDATES AGREE THAT COMMUNITY NEEDS NEW LIBRARY; DISAGREE OVER WHERE AND HOW

PictureDirector Mike Morea moderated the forum
September 5, 2015 -- The five candidates competing for the three seats up for grabs on the Gold Coast Library Board of Trustees introduced themselves and responded to community members’ questions at a Meet the Candidates forum held this past Thursday evening.  Incumbents Nancy Benchimol, Craig Henneberger and Miles Sibell are each seeking re-election, and Rudolph Hertlein and Anthony Papiro, both long time residents of the Todd Estates section of Glen Head, are running for the first time. . . . While there was disagreement over whether the Halm property was the most desirable site for a new library, all five candidates stated that they believed the current library facility is too small to meet the community's needs, and that a larger space is required. FACT CHECK
DO FACTS SUPPORT CLAIMS IN FLYER CIRCULATING COMMUNITY?

With six bullet points of claims, figures, and highlighted “power words,” a flyer, that for the past week has been circulated around the community and posted on social media groups and in public areas, charges that the “Gold Coast Library Budget is being mismanaged.” It encourages residents to reject the proposed 2016 budget, that represents a 0.74% increase over the current spending plan and a 27 cents a month increase in the average homeowner’s library taxes, that is being put up to a community vote on September 9, and to support two candidates seeking positions on the library’s board of trustees. . . . According to information obtained by Northwordnews this past week through interviews as well as through library records that are easily accessible through a visit to the library or on its website, the flyer contains significant inaccuracies, misrepresentations, and unsupported claims. A SEA CLIFF CIVIC ASSOCIATION SUMMER

About 150 residents turned out for the latest in Sea Cliff Civic Association summertime events that, like its Ice Cream Social, Four of July Celebration and Sunset Serenade concert series, will likely become a village tradition - the end of summer Movie Night and Social.  Held the night before the last morning that kids have the opportunity to sleep in before the start of the school year, the event featured music by the Bittersweets and the family friendly film, "The Muppets Take Manhattan.   "A huge success!" declared Civic Association President Anne DiPietro. "What a way to end the summer!" She gave a special thanks to Sea Cliff resident  Charlie Weinstein of Design Audio Visual who lent the audio-visual equipment for the evening, and returned repeatedly to monitor it throughout the night.    Organizing the event were Movie Night Committee members Petrice and Walter Kaider, Sarah and Henry Beaudin, Justin and  Jenna DiPietro , Jen O'Hare,  and Laura Parker Russo.  This fall, look for more Civic Association events including Silly Shakespeare's September 26 Performance, the Cider Social, Headless Turkey Hunt, and the Progressive Dinner.

AFTER TWO MONTH DEADLOCK, NORTH SHORE BOE DESIGNATES OFFICIAL NEWSPAPERS

Picture
September 4, 2015 -- At its regularly scheduled meeting this past August 28, the North Shore Board of Education voted 4 to 2 to designate the Glen Cove Record Pilot and the Gold Coast Gazette the “official” school district newspapers for the 2015-16 school year - two months after a 3-3 split vote at the Board’s annual organizational meeting in July left the district temporarily without an official broadsheet.  Trustee Sara Jones who had voted “no” in July, was not present last Thursday, and Board President Herman Berliner, who voted “yes” last Thursday, was not present for the July vote. . . .  At the more recent meeting, Trustees Gonzalez and Commander once again expressed their concerns about the practice of publishing anonymous ads that make unsubstantiated claims against individuals.  READ MORE
