UP TO THE CHALLENGE

August 25, 2014 -- This past Wednesday, Sea Cliff Mayor Bruce Kennedy douses Village Trustee Ed Lieberman with a bucket full of ice water on the Sea Cliff Beach raft.  The Mayor had endured a similar soaking the previous day and had then issued the challenge to Mr. Lieberman as a part of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that has "gone viral" since late July.  So far, the events have not only raised greater awareness of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, often called Lou Gehrig's Disease, but also more than $80 million for research. ASSEMBLE AN ARTBOT AT NEXT SC MAKESHOP

Next Thursday, September 4, the SC Makeshop is inviting young artists and scientists to the Sea Cliff Children's Library to fill the second half of their half a school day creating  artbots - small robots that draw spirograph pictures.  The class will run from 1-2 pm.  In the image above, children figure out how to illuminate a favorite Lego mini-figure's head using an LED and coin battery at the "Lego Hacking" workshop held at the Library this past Tuesday.  Click here for more information about the Sea Cliff Makeshop.

Penelope’s Odyssey, a nonprofit organization that raises awareness of and money for pediatric cancer, is hosting an event at Sea Cliff’s Still Partners on September 5 at 8:30 p.m. The event will include live music by Kris Rice and Co., specialty drinks, Still Partners’ new selection of wines, prizes and a chance for people to join the national bone marrow registry.

The opening will feature readings from our Village Historians and others. The museum's extensive collection of children's clothing, toys, books and artifacts will be on display. GOLD COAST LIBRARY MEET THE CANDIDATES FORUM ON WED. 8/27; TRUSTEES ELECTION AND BUDGET VOTE ON 9/8

On Wednesday, August 27 at 7 pm, the Gold Coast Public Library will be holding a Meet the Candidates and Budget Information forum at the library annex at 50 Station Avenue in Glen Head.  The budget vote and Board of Trustees election will take place on Monday, September 8th.  Three candidates are running for three openings on the Board. Incumbents Barbara Palermo, who has served as a Trustee since the library's inception in 2002, and Tobi Kupferman who was first elected three years ago, are seeking re-election. START OF SCHOOL SPORTS SEASONS SIGNALS END TO SUMMER

August 26, 2014 -- In a sure sign that students will soon be saying so long to summer, the fall sports season kicked off this past week as hundreds of North Shore High School athletes turned out for team try-outs and practices.  The football team took the gridiron last Monday, and many more JV and Varsity squads, including Men's and Women's Soccer, Field Hockey, Cross-Country, Women's Swimming, Women's Tennis, and Women's Volleyball started this Monday.  Most teams have their season openers during the week of September 8. NORTH SHORE SCHOOL BOARD MEETING ON THURSDAY AUGUST 28

A new season of North Shore Board of Education meetings also kicks off this week when on Thursday August 28th the seven trustees and Schools Superintendent Dr. Edward Melnick, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Robert Cheblicki and Assistant Superintendent Olivia Buatsi gather in the High School Library at 7:30 pm to discuss district goals for the 2014-15 school year, the possible installation of Blue Light phones on district campuses, and applications to serve on the district's Legislative Action Committee (LAC).  It is anticipated that the Board will first go into executive session at 7 pm.  As always, community members are encouraged to attend, and welcome to offer their thoughts and ask questions during the Public Comment portions of the meeting.


SEA CLIFF SUMMER STRUMMIN' - SUNSET SERENADE 8.21 AND BEACH MUSIC 8.22; SUMMER CONCERT SERIES FINALE THIS WEEK

August 23, 2014 -- Kris Rice and Friends warmed up Memorial Park in Sea Cliff this past Thursday evening with a bit of jazzy rock, R&B and folk, ranging from covers of Ricky Lee Jones to the Jackson Five, while on Friday, despite threatening skies, the Rusty String Band entertained with a lively performance of blue grass, folk, blues, and a few Dead covers.  Next week on Thursday, John Brady and Brian Schnurman will close out this summer's Sunset Serenade music series with a concert at Memorial Park that begins at 7 pm, and Bryce Larson and the Brady Brothers will perform in this season's finale of the Friday night Summer Sounds series at Sea Cliff Beach from 7 to 10 pm.  

GOOD OF THE VILLAGE ASSOCIATION'S ANTIQUE SHOW ON SEPTEMBER 6

On Saturday, September 6, the Sea Cliff Good of the Village Association will be holding its annual Art and Antiques Show at St. Boniface Field from 9am to 4pm.  For sale will be a wide assortment of antique and collectible furniture, jewelry, paintings, prints, vintage porcelain, glass and sterling, as well as rugs and art.  


AUTUMN ATTRACTIONS AND ACTIVITIES AT THE NASSAU COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART

Throughout September and October, the Nassau Country Museum of Art in Roslyn Harbor will be hosting a variety of exhibitions, workshops and other activities. The museum, located at the former Henry Clay Fricke estate at 1 Museum Drive just off Northern Boulevard in Roslyn Harbor (about a 1/4 mile east of the Roslyn Viaduct), is also home to nearly 40 sculptures on its spectacular 145 acre property of trails, gardens and open spaces that be can strolled throughout the year.  Click Here for schedule of exhibitions and events.

Best-selling author Stephanie Evanovich will visit the Gold Coast Public Library on Tuesday, September 30 at 7pm to discuss her novels Big Girl Panties and The Sweet Spot.
