SEA CLIFF CELEBRATES INDEPENDENCE DAY 2016

CHILDREN'S LIBRARY HOSTS HAPPY BIRTHDAY USA AND BIKE DECORATING PARTIES

July 2, 2016 -- In celebration of the 240th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Sea Cliff Children's Library hosted a birthday bash for our nation this past Friday, July 1.  The annual event, organized by Ann and Dan DiPietro, attracted about 75 children, their parents, and other residents, who, led by local musician Joe Hughes and his brother-in-law David Abbenda, sang and clapped  to patriotic tunes and American standards such as You're a Grand Ol' Flag, Yankee Doodle, This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land, and the Star Spangled Banner. The birthday party concluded in traditional American fashion with the presentation of candlelit cup cakes and an enthusiastic singing of "Happy Birthday."
.... And on July 2, well over 100 children and parents turned out at the Children's Library to decorate bikes, scooters, strollers, and even crutches, in preparation for the parade that took place two days later.

PATRIOTIC PAGEANTRY INCLUDES A PLAYLET, A PUBLIC READING OF THE GREAT DECLARATION AND A PARADE OF PEDALERS AND PEDESTRIANS

July 5, 2016 -- As had been done at village greens, town squares and in public halls in July 1776, residents of Sea Cliff and surrounding communities reveled in revolution this past Monday morning gathering  at the John Burns Village Green for a public reading of the Declaration of Independence. . . . Then the participants, some as pedestrians and others as pedalers, with piper Paul Haining preceding, proceeded in a pageant of patriotism up Sea Cliff Avenue to the plaza dedicated to the President for whom the pronouncement of 12 score years ago provided the principles for preserving the Union and proclaiming emancipation. READ MORE

NOT ANTI-DEVELOPMENT, BUT THIS AIN'T SMART!

Received from Roger Friedman

June 28, 2016

To the Editor:

In regards to the Waterfront Development one major point that’s being missed is that the opposition is not anti-development.

We are for cleaning up the site, we are for the development of the site.  We applaud the EPA and the DEC for their work to date and, as we’ve stated at the public meetings, we hope they will continue to remediate until it is completely cleaned up and there is absolutely no danger to human health. . . . DEATH IN THE GARDEN

In each garden there are unloved, unwanted plants. They arrive silently, settle in, set up roots and begin to take over your landscape. Nonnative plants are particularly skilled at this strategy or the “takeover” of your garden. For years, gardeners used chemicals as a means of controlling "the weeds", which has led to adverse results. This included the decline of beneficial insects, animals as well as the inadvertent poisoning of adjacent plants. And also the harm to your physical well being needs to be considered.  READ MORE

LABBATE ELECTED TO SUCCEED BERLINER AS SCHOOL BOARD PRESIDENT

Picture
At the North Shore School Board's annual organization meeting this past Thursday July 5th, the seven members unanimously elected Trustee Toni Labbate to serve as Board President and Trustee Sara Jones Vice-President for the 2016-17 school year.  Dr. Herman Berliner, who served as President the previous three years, shot his hand up quickly and offered his support for Ms. Labbate when schools Superintendent Dr. Edward Melnick asked for nominations - as is done annually and is required under state law at the Board's early July meeting.  No other Trustees were nominated for the position.  Following the vote, Trustee Joanna Commander nominated Ms. Jones for the second leadership post, which was also uncontested. Additionally, Trustee David Ludmar was sworn for his first three year term on the board and Trustees Jones and Marianne Russo for their second, and Betty Ciampi, once again, as District Clerk.
