MAJOR ADMINISTRATIVE CHANGES NEXT YEAR AT NORTH SHORE

June 21, 2017 --Incoming Superintendent Dr. Peter Giarrizzo will not be the only new administrator to the district this upcoming school year.  Over the past month,the North Shore Board of Education has made appointments to fill four other key positions. Although not taking the reins in this district until late August, Dr. Giarrizzo played a significant role in making those personnel recommendations.  At a brief board meeting at Central Office this past Monday night, the Board voted to accept the recommendation of Dr. Giarrizzo and Assistant Superintendent Rob Chlebecki to appoint Robert Dennis as the middle school prinicipal to replace Dr. Mark Ferris, who announced early last month that he had accepted a position as Assistant Superintendent for Instruction in the Wantagh Schools.  READ MORE

SUPERINTENDENT OFFERS OVERVIEW ON HOW ANTI-SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROGRAM WOULD WORK

At a meeting of the North Shore Board of Education this past Thursday evening, Schools Superintendent Dr. Edward Melnick laid out the general procedures for  implementing Preventure, a program that is intended to identify students with personality and temperament traits that researchers say put them at a higher risk for drug and alcohol abuse.  The Superintendent’s explanation took place during a board discussion over whether to give permission to board counsel to change some of the language and finalize a contract with the Australian developer of the program. Organizers of four local summer outdoor concert series have announced their line-ups for the upcoming season. In Sea Cliff, the curtain will rise for the 16th season of the Civic Association's Thursday night Sunset Serenade concerts on June 27 with Larry Martone and Friends, while Sea Cliff Beach Music will kick off on Friday July 7 with Roger Street Friedman and The Ramblin' Kind and continue each Friday night throughout the summer. 29TH ANNUAL JOHN MACCARONE GOLF TOURNAMENT TO BENEFIT GLEN COVE STUDENT ATHLETES

June 15, 2017 … It’s tee time to make your reservations to play in the 29th Annual John Maccarone Hall of Fame Golf Tournament which will be held on Monday, July 17 with a shot gun start at 7:30 a.m. at the Glen Cove Golf Course. Not only will participants engage in a fun-filled day on the course, but all of the event proceeds go towards the John Maccarone Scholarship Fund.  Since its inception, the scholarship fund has awarded over $100,000 to outstanding student-athletes.  As a result of last year’s successful tournament, seven graduating seniors from Glen Cove High School’s Class of 2017 will be awarded $8,000 in scholarship money. June 20, 2017 -- This past Monday, more than a year and a half after negotiations had begun and a year since the last contract expired, the North Shore School District’s teachers union and the Board of Education voted to ratify a memorandum of agreement that provides teachers with modest pay raises over the next four years.  In the deal agreed to this past Monday, all teachers, regardless of step, will receive a 1% salary increase for this school year retroactive to September 1st, . . . . June 20, 2016 -- At a ceremony held on June 12, Sea Cliff residents Barbara Sinenberg, Butch Grella, and Joe Roman were each presented with a White Cap Award, the Sea Cliff Civic Association’s most prestigious honor, bestowed each year upon individuals, groups or organizations that have demonstrated repeated outstanding volunteer service to the Sea Cliff community.  Bill and Anita Long, owners of the Metropolitan Bistro, hosted the event and generously contributed an extensive and delicious assortment of hors d'oeurves for the occasion. SEA CLIFF CELEBRATES LIFE, LOVE, AND LANGUAGE IN JAMES JOYCE'S LAVISH, LANGUID AND LIVELY PROSE

​June 20, 2017 -- In observance of Bloomsday, the anniversary of the day the literary masterpiece Ulysses takes place, more than two dozen local literati turned out for the Sea Cliff Civic Association's James Joyce Jaunt this past June 16.  Adapted for the Sea Cliff “stage” by residents Fred Stroppel and Dan DiPietro, and directed by Mr. Stroppel, the performance provided the audience with a retelling of Leopold Bloom’s passage through the city of Dublin on June 16, 1904 that parallels that of Homer’s hero Odysseus (Ulysses in Latin) during his ten year journey home in the epic Greek poem. The 2017 Joseph M. Reilly Leadership Award was presented to Charles McQuair during a reception at the Glen Cove Mansion.  The award, presented annually, is named for the late Joseph M. Reilly, a lifelong Glen Cove resident, assemblyman, mayor and Republican Party chairman. David Zatlin, chairman of the Glen Cove Republican Committee, hosted the event attended by approximately 200 including McQuair’s friends, co-workers, and family as well as elected officials and other guests. GREAT AMERICAN CLEANUP EFFORTS SPRUCE UP GLEN STREET PARKING AREA

 May 25, 2017… With rubber-gloved hands, shovels and sheer determination, a volunteer work force celebrated Great American Cleanup Day in Glen Cove by pulling weeds, cleaning debris and planting flowers to refresh a Glen Street parking lot.  The group of over 40 adults and children included Mayor Reggie Spinello and his wife Coleen, Council members Pamela Panzenbeck and Roderick Watson and representatives of  the Glen Cove Parks & Recreation Department, the Glen Cove Beautification Commission and Youth Bureau, the Girl Scouts, the Glen Cove Boys & Girls Club and the Economic Opportunity Council. On September 12, 2017, residents of the Gold Coast Public Library District (GCPLD) located in Glen Head, NY, who are eligible to vote in a general election will vote for as many as three candidates to fill three open seats on the Board of Trustees and to establish the Library budget for 2018. NS STUDENTS MEET, GREET AND COMPETE AT FIFTH GRADE FIELD DAY

It was a gorgeous day on June 8th to allow fifth graders in all three North Shore elementary schools to gather on the North Shore High School Stadium Field to participate in their fun day! Donned in maroon and white (the North Shore school colors), students formed teams and partnered with their new peers in the different elementary schools to compete in many fun games including a balloon toss, bucket brigade, various track and field races, and tug-of-war– just to name a few!  READ MORE

You might be asking yourself, “What is StagE3?”  Well, StagE3 is the name of the Middle School theater troupe. Together, with advisors, students work in creating terrific theater.  Performers are not only asked to collaborate but learn many important theatrical techniques, such as improvisation, setting and character, and impersonation with an emphasis of coming together as a theater troupe.  READ MORE

CONGRATULATIONS NS HIGH SCHOOL PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARD WINNER

North Shore High School selected 11th grade student, Isabelle Glennon, as the school’s annual Prudential Spirit of Community Award winner.  The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is the United States’ largest youth recognition program based exclusively on outstanding volunteer community service at the local, state and national level.
Isabelle has dedicated more than 100 hours to helping others. She is a member of the Key Club, a service club that raises donations for Pediatric Cancer and participates in the annual Jones Beach Breast Cancer walk, among other activities. She also participated in North Shore’s Red Ribbon Week, dedicated to raising awareness about substance abuse and its effects on the community. NORTH SHORE HIGH SCHOOL "VIKING VIEW" WINS 33 AWARDS

​Recently, the Long Island Press' High School Journalism Awards was held at Hofstra University. North Shore High School's newspaper, The Viking View, won an unprecedented 33 awards. 30 awards were for writing and three of the awards were special awards.
Ms. Sara Millman, Teacher Advisor said, “Never before has the Viking View won this many awards at a single competition. The writing this year was outstanding. There were over 2,000 entries in this competition and at least 30 public high schools from both Suffolk and Nassau.” READ MORE

​North Shore Middle School Student Wins 1st Place at 
Long Island Science Congress
Congratulations go out to North Shore Middle School student, Kate Weseley-Jones, who recently won the 1st place award for the Most Distinguished Categorical Project in Behavioral Science at the Long Island Science Congress. Her project titled "The Effects of Photos on the Perceptions of Shelter Dogs" was one of the best at the competition. Kate was assisted on her project by Maryalice Kelly, the 8th grade Living Environment and Science Enrichment teacher at North Shore Middle School. She will be moving onto the New York State Science Congress competition held at University of Buffalo on Saturday, June 3, 2017. READ MORE

RETROSPECTIVE OF HALSTON, FAMED FASHION DESIGNER, AT NASSAU COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART

March 25, 2017 -- The Nassau County Museum of Art's latest exhibit, Halston Style, will be on display through June.  The comprehensive retrospective of the work of the American fashion designer, Roy Halston Frowick, features rooms of elegantly clothed mannequins, original sketches, and a rich array of photographs and artifacts that accompanied by film and video documentation tell the story of Halston's career, designs, collaborations, and influence.  READ MORE
