16th ANNIVERSARY OF GLEN COVE ROTARY CLUB FLAG DONATION TO THE CITY

Picture
Glen Cove, NY, May 18, 2017…In honor of Memorial Day, each year for the past 16 years the Glen Cove Rotary Club has donated 13 American flags to the City of Glen Cove.  The flags represent the 13 original colonies and are proudly flown on flag poles at the city’s Heritage Park (Danis Park) beginning each Memorial Day weekend.  Upon presenting the flags to Mayor Reggie Spinello, Brian Mercadante of The Rotary Club reflected upon his organization’s commitment to honoring our city’s veterans through this simple yet powerful patriotic gesture.  Throughout the year these American flags are also used to replace tattered flags at the city’s various monument parks.  (Photo caption - Mayor Reggie Spinello is presented with the first of thirteen American flags by Brian Mercadante of the Glen Cove Rotary Club)

LOCAL ASSEMBLYMAN SAYS BRIDGE NOT A SOUND IDEA

Received from  Assemblyman Michael Montesano, Glen Head
May 16, 2017

Dear Editor:

Bayville Mayor Paul Rupp and village trustees recently reminded the taxpayers on Long Island of Governor Cuomo’s multi-million dollar study on the Cross-Sound Bridge. This project has been continuously blocked year after year for decades, with opposition from elected officials, Long Island families, small businesses, and environmental groups.
This is another example of petty partisan politics the governor is using to advance his run for the White House, and the taxpayers shouldn’t have to foot the bill.  The governor is catering to special interests, rather than our families on Long Island. READ MORE

BUTTERFLIES..THE LADIES OF THE GARDEN

“From cocoon forth a butterfly
As lady from her door
Emerged — a summer afternoon --
Repairing everywhere,”

Emily Dickerson:  The Butterfly’s Day

Yes, we all love butterflies….they flutter and glide throughout our gardens. Butterflies are the jewels of the plantings. We plant specific plants and bushes just so they will stay for our personal pleasure. So what do butterflies like? Just like all living organisms they like water, food and shelter. If you supply a pleasant environment, the butterflies will come and stay. And please do not use herbicides in your garden as that will kill or chase away not only the undesirable insects but will also impact the ones you want to stay.
