The full page advertisement entitled “An Open Letter to the North Shore Community” that appeared in the Gold Coast Gazette recently raises serious ethical issues concerning the responsibility of the press when it comes to the sale of advertising space – in particular with ads that make unsubstantiated claims and allegations against individuals, and which do not include the name or contact information for the ad sponsor.  READ MORE

LOOKING FORWARD, COALITION TO SAVE HEMPSTEAD HARBOR CELEBRATES THREE DECADES OF ACCOMPLISHMENT 

May 6, 2015 -- With a spectacular view of the waterway it has done so much to help restore to better health, the Coalition to Save Hempstead Harbor hosted an informational social and fundraiser at the beautifully rustic Hempstead Harbor Yacht Club this past Sunday Afternoon.  The event was a great opportunity for area residents to learn about the group’s efforts to promote the health and vitality of Hempstead Harbor and its surrounding environment. AFTER BANNING BUTTS AT THE BEACH, SC BOARD TO CONSIDER NO SMOKING AND OTHER RULES AT PARKS, PUBLIC SPACES

May 9, 2015 -- After having voted at its Village Board Conference this past Tuesday to ban smoking at Sea Cliff Beach, the Sea Cliff Village Board of Trustees will consider a proposal extending that prohibition to all parks and other village owned properties and public spaces at its meeting this Monday night.  At Tuesday's Conference, the Board also discussed changing or clarifying rules for allowing for-profit and not-for-profit entities to use Village property for sales of goods and/or services; and whether to continue to allow the sale of alcohol at public events that take place on Village property .  Although many residents were on hand to listen to the discussion, Board Conferences do not include a public comment period.  There will be public comment on Monday.  The meeting will take place in the downstairs courtroom at Village Hall and begin at 7 pm.


BEACH CLEANUP ON SATURDAY

On Saturday May 9th at 9 am the Beach Events Coordinating Committee invites you to bring friends, family and neighbors  to join in the Sea Cliff Beach Cleanup. Refreshments will be provided by Rob from the Beach Cafe.  Don't forget a rake and gloves!


HAPPY PLANET CELEBRATION ON MAY 9

NS HIGH SCHOOL HOSTS CAREER INTERNSHIP FAIR

North Shore High School held its annual Career and Internship Fair on April 30 in the High School Cafeteria.  There were 30 local professionals present, including attorneys, physicians, business owners, a writer, a talent agent, a television producer, non-profit managers, and a Jetblue pilot.  About 100 students, mostly juniors and seniors, attended for the opportunity to meet and interview the professionals to get a first-hand account of what they do and how they got there.READ MORE    


SEA CLIFF BEAUTIFICATION PLANT SALE A GREAT SUCCESS

Sea Cliff Beautification members could be seen in their green T-shirts at the annual plant sale at St Luke's this past Saturday and they'll be easy to spot in their neon as they work in the parks making Sea Cliff beautiful. " If you see us come over  and say hello," said Laura Kavanagh.  She declared the plant sale "a great success!" The Sale which is held anually on the first Saturaday in May is a fundraiser that helps the Sea Cliff Beautification Committee keep Sea Cliff beautiful.

STATE ED COMMISSIONER REJECTS APPEAL TO OVERTURN MAY 2014 NORTH SHORE BOE ELECTION 

May 5, 2015 -- In a five page ruling issued this past Thursday, April 30, Acting New York State Commissioner of Education Elizabeth Berlin rejected an appeal to invalidate the May 2014 North Shore School Board election results.  The petition to overturn the vote in which more than 2,400 residents cast ballots had been submitted by district resident Christine McDonough, and claimed that "that there were numerous irregularities, errors and improper conduct that were fundamentally unfair and so pervasive that they ultimately affected the outcome of the election."  READ MORE

TESTING, TEACHER EVALUATIONS, DOMINATE DISCUSSION AT BOE MEET THE CANDIDATES FORUM

May 7, 2015 -- School Board trustee candidates Herman Berliner and Toni Labbate spoke about their respective philosophies regarding school governance and education at a Meet the Candidates forum at North Shore High School last Tuesday evening.  Dr. Berliner who has been the board’s President for the past two years is seeking re-election to a third three year term.  Ms. Labbate, who was chosen by her colleagues to serve as the Board’s Vice President last July, was first elected in May 2012. The two are running unopposed.  The forum,  conducted by the Nassau County League of Women Voters, was lightly attended, with only administrators, candidate spouses, current and former board members, and a few board meeting regulars there for the 45 minute duration. SUPERINTENDENT DISCUSSES TAX IMPLICATIONS OF POWER PLANT DEMOLITION, OPTING OUT AND OTHER ISSUES AT “CHAT” FORUMS

May 5, 2015 --The tax implications of the Glenwood Power Plant demolition, teacher evaluations, opting out, and the budget  were among the many issues discussed at two “Chats with the Superintendent” held last Tuesday, April 28. . . Dr. Melnick stated that the decommissioning of the Glenwood Landing Power Plant would have “no impact” on residents’ tax bills in 2015-16.  READ MORE

THE SEA CLIFF CHILDREN'S LIBRARY RETURNS HOME JUST IN TIME FOR 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF FOUNDER'S DAY"

The Stenson building is once again alive with the sounds of Sea Cliff children learning, playing and making new friends.  On Wednesday May 6 the Stenson building reopened after its five month relocation to Meeting Room C on the second floor of Village Hall on December 3rd.  Children's librarian Ann DiPietro said, "It's good to be back home. I'm looking around and I see a beautiful space, but I have to say its always been a beautiful space."
The Stenson Library which first opened its doors on May 13, 1915 will celebrate its 100th Anniversary on Wednesday May 13, Founder's Day, with a traditional Maypole Dance on the front lawn at 3 pm.  The event is being organized by Ms. DiPpietro.   

SEA CLIFF MAKESHOP CELEBRATES FIRST ANNIVERSARY WITH COCKTAILS AND CODE AT WOODPECKER HALL

On Saturday May 2 the Sea Cliff MAKEshop held its first annual Cocktails and Code Fundraiser.  Community members filled Woodpecker Hall to support the local startup that has provided their children with engaging hands-on exploration and creative experimentation activities.  The Sea Cliff MAKEshop is a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math) not for profit organization that is locally based in Sea Cliff  that was created to support the students of the North Shore Schools.  Click Here  for more information about the Sea Cliff MAKEshop and its programs 

SEA CLIFF WARMS UP 

The Warm Up in Sea Cliff  kicked off under clear skies early last Friday evening with performances by young musicians ranging in age from Elementary School to High School.  Night Fury, a band of Sea Cliff fifth graders kicked off the event, followed by North Shore High School Duo Sio & Ella and sixth graders Dose of Reality, before concluding with some orginals pieces and covers by high schooler Mercer Shavelson.  The live music then moved indoors warming up audiences at the Metropolitan Bistro, Oak Room Tavern, and Still Partners.

2015 SEA CLIFF LANDMARKS ASSOCIATION HOUSE TOUR

Sea Cliff, a former Methodist Campground Association founded in 1871 and known for its abundance Victorian houses is holding a house tour on Sunday, May 20 from 12 noon to 4:00 pm.  Seven homes ranging from Victorian cottages to a 1950’s “ Atomic Ranch," as well as the newly renovated 100 year old Stenson Memorial Library and Sea Cliff’s St. Seraphim church are on the self-guided tour.  Proceeds will help fund the Sea Cliff Landmarks Association’s historic survey and walkways restoration projects.

Tickets are now available at local realtor’s offices of Daniel Gale/Southeby's, 266 Sea Cliff Avenue and Sherlock Homes, 305 Sea Cliff Avenue.

Reposted, May 7, 2015  -- The Glen Cove High School Key Club, with support from the Social Justice Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Shelter Rock, will be sponsoring a Benefit Concert for the North Shore INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network) at Glen Cove High School on Friday May 29.  The benefit, entitled "Serve One Another," will feature the internationally recognized Glen Cove High School Select Chorale, directed by High School Music Director Ed Norris, and will also include appearances by guest musicians tenor Mark Bleeke, guitarist Jefferey Bleeke, and Eric Milnes, the Director of Music and Organist at St. John's of Lattingtown Episcopal Church.  READ MORE

The works of Sea Cliff artists Kay Vickers and Lilli Scott will be exhibited at the Sea Cliff Library this May and June.  Works on display include a series of landscapes by Ms. Vickers entitled "Loving Landscapes; and eight pastels by Ms. Scott, called "Buon Cibo," or "Good Food."
