re-PLANTING CULTIVATES REFLECTION AND RETHINKING OF GWL WATERFRONT 

April 29, 2015 -- Residents filled the meeting room of the Glenwood Community Church this past Earth Day, for re-PLANTING, an exhibition that was in part a memorial service for the Glenwood Landing Power Plant station two, the iconic beaux arts building with its six smoke stacks that dominated the Glenwood waterfront for nearly a century, as well as a celebration of the earth and, as event organizer Greg Sturge put it, an opportunity to "germinate new ideas and fertilize existing ones about how to nurture creative and environmentally sound growth in Hempstead Harbor and surrounding communities." BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE OBSERVES ARBOR DAY WITH SEA CLIFF SECOND GRADERS

April 25, 2015 -- In observance of Arbor Day, the Sea Cliff Beautification Committee hosted a tree planting at Clifton Park this past Wednesday.  The springtime tradition, in which the Sea Cliff School second grade plays the central role, takes place at one of the village's many parks each year.  This year's event was organized by Beautification Committee member Stephanie Bross. "LEARNING LOGS" BRINGS SEA CLIFF STUDENTS CLOSER TO NATURE

April 26, 2015 -- Gathered beneath the canopy of the glorious copper beech in front of Sea Cliff School, students, faculty, and community members, shivering but invigorated by the early spring chill, met this past Friday afternoon to dedicate the school's new outdoor classroom.  Perhaps reminding one more of a 4-H camp than a public school with logs split length-wise to provide bench-like seating, the classroom will offer teachers the opportunity to better integrate the natural world into their lessons. MEETING OFFERS RESIDENTS GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY TO SAY WHAT THEY WOULD LIKE TO SEE IN A NEW GOLD COAST LIBRARY

Residents indicate their preferences for a new library design with sticker dots

April 26, 2015 -- In anticipation of going into contract to purchase the 5.3 acre Halm Industries Property on Glen Head Road, the Gold Coast Public Library Board of Trustees, along with representatives of the architectural firm KG&D, held their first of two round-one community input sessions at the library's annex this past Saturday morning. At the meeting, residents were given the opportunity to offer their thoughts about what they would like to see in a new library.  Residents who were unable to attend will have a another opportunity on Tuesday, April 28, at the main library building at 7:30 pm.  The purchase of the land cannot take place without residents living within the library district first giving their approval in a referendum.

40% OF NORTH SHORE STUDENTS REFUSE COMMON CORE MATH TESTS

April 22, 2015 -- More than 400 North Shore students in grades 3-7 who were scheduled to sit for the Common Core math assessments opted out of the three day exam that began on Wednesday, said school district officials.  The Middle School grades had the highest number of opt outs, with just under 50% of 6th graders refusing the exam, and 47% of 7th graders doing so. Overall, a greater percentage, 40% of students, refused the Math exam than the English Language Arts exam (38.2%) that was administered last week. The 8th grade, which had the highest opt out rate in the district for the ELA exam (48%), was not scheduled to take the Common Core Math assessment, since those students will, instead, sit for the Algebra Regents exam in June.

Summer in Sea Cliff is a time for kids to enjoy the sun, sand, surf, and strings! Matthew Schneider’s second annual SummerStrings! Orchestra Festival begins June 29. Schneider, a Sea Cliff resident and professional musician for 30 years, will teach traditional fiddling styles, rock, blues, and improvisation to elementary and middle school string players on Monday and Wednesday evenings at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. This year’s program will culminate with a concert on August 5 at Tilles Center’s Hillwood Recital Hall, at LIU Post. READ MORE

BALINESE MUSIC AND DANCE AT ST. LUKES ON SATURDAY MAY 2

ART OF KAY VICKERS AND LILLI SCOTT AT SEA CLIFF LIBRARY NEXT MONTH

The works of Sea Cliff artists Kay Vickers and Lilli Scott will be exhibited at the Sea Cliff Library this coming May and June.  The Sea Cliff Arts Council is sponsoring the exhibition and will be hosting an opening reception on Sunday May 3 from 3-5 pm. Works on display include a series of landscapes by Ms. Vickers entitled "Loving Landscapes; and eight pastels by Ms. Scott, called "Buon Cibo," or "Good Food."

MAKING SENSE OF THE CIVIL WAR AT CEDARMERE THIS SPRING

The Friends of Cedarmere will partner with the New York Council for the Humanities this spring to host a free public Reading and Discussion Program on the theme Making Sense of the Civil War.  It’s especially fitting that this Program comes to Cedarmere, the historic home of William Cullen Bryant, a major voice in journalism throughout the Civil War period, and an important advising supporter of Lincoln. The Council Program will altogether comprise six sessions—from 7 to 8:30 pm on consecutive Monday evenings—running March 23 through May 4, including a one-week ‘mid-term’ break.  READ MORE
