AS STATE TESTS APPROACH, OPTING OUT IS THE ONLY OPTION FOR MANY LOCAL PARENTS

 “What are the repercussions for teachers if most of their students opt out?” “Who creates the tests?”  “How are test results used?” “Can my child get academic intervention services if he refuses the exam?”  These were only a few of the nearly two dozen questions that were discussed at a gathering of more than 20 moms and dads at a Sea Cliff home the day following passage of Governor Cuomo’s education agenda earlier this month.  Organized by a small group of parents, some who had been conflicted last year about how to best tackle the testing culture that has overtaken public education in New York State but now committed converts to the “opt out” cause, the meeting offered parents who are on the fence over whether refusing the exam would be in the best interests of their children, the opportunity to get answers to their questions.   READ MORE

The North Shore Board of Education will meet on Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 7:30 PM, in the North Shore HS Library to discuss the following agenda items:·Budget Adoption; Special Education Action Plan;  District Reserves

It is anticipated that the Board will meet in Executive Session prior (not open to the public) at 6:30 PM and there will be an Audit Committee Meeting at 7 PM.The BOE public session will follow at 7:30 PM. 




DIABETES RESEARCH EVENT TO HONOR MYRON BLUMENFELD

It wasn’t long after Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton’s oldest daughter, Amanda, was diagnosed with diabetes that she became deeply involved with the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation (DRIF).  Since that time, she has become a major driving force for the Northeast Chapter, chairing fundraisers, speaking on behalf of DRIF and otherwise helping to raise awareness about and funds to further research efforts towards a cure for this disease that afflicts nearly ten perfect of the population of the U.S. READ MORE

April 11, 2015 -- After more than a decade long intermission, the North Shore Summer Theater Workshop will return for a second act this June, and it will have a Broadway marquee name serving as its artistic director.  Terry Berliner, whose more than two decades in professional theater as a director, choreographer, writer, and artistic director include work on the Broadway productions of The Lion King, The Tale of the Allergist’s wife, The Sound of Music and The Red Shoes, has been recruited by Arts Angels, the North Shore arts booster organization, to oversee the program that is open to current middle school and high school students READ MORE

re-PLANTING is an open community event, through Glenwood Arts, being held on Earth Day, April 22nd, 6:30 pm--featuring a group exhibition of art, photography, film, music, commentary and more. The event location is at Glenwood Community Church, 71 Grove St., Glenwood Landing.
re-PLANTING is inspired by the dismantling of the iconic Glenwood Power plant, an historic and architecturally unique landmark that for nearly a century provided jobs and electrical power to the area. re-PLANTING will document and memorialize the role of the plant in the community and start a dialogue about what happens in its absence. MAKING SENSE OF THE CIVIL WAR AT CEDARMERE THIS SPRING

The Friends of Cedarmere will partner with the New York Council for the Humanities this spring to host a free public Reading and Discussion Program on the theme Making Sense of the Civil War.  It’s especially fitting that this Program comes to Cedarmere, the historic home of William Cullen Bryant, a major voice in journalism throughout the Civil War period, and an important advising supporter of Lincoln. The Council Program will altogether comprise six sessions—from 7 to 8:30 pm on consecutive Monday evenings—running March 23 through May 4, including a one-week ‘mid-term’ break.  READ MORE
