MEET THE CANDIDATES FOR SEA CLIFF VILLAGE BOARD THIS TUESDAY MARCH 8

Kevin McGilloway and Robin Maynard (being sworn in last month) are running unopposed in the upcoming Sea Cliff Village Board Election.  

​The Sea Cliff Civic Association will host a Meet the Candidates for Sea Cliff Village Board of Trustees forum this coming Tuesday March 8.  Two candidates will be on the ballot in an uncontested election this coming March 15 - incumbents Kevin McGilloway, who was first elected  two years ago, and newcomer to the Board Robin Maynard, who was appointed Trustee last month.  
Although the two candidates are running unopposed, the forum offers Sea Cliff residents the opportunity to hear their' respective governing philosophies and their answers to questions from constituents. Everyone is invited to attend. 
Residents can submit questions to Civic Association President Ann DiPietro any time before the forum or at the event itself. The forum will be at Sea Cliff Village Hall and begin at 8 pm. (Photos - left, SC Civic Progress Committee; right, Northwordnews)

NORTH SHORE MIDDLE SCHOOL NAMED A NEW YORK STATE AND NATIONAL MODEL SCHOOL TO WATCH

​Congratulations go out to Principal Dr. Marc Ferris and Assistant Principal Rachel Green as well as the entire North Shore Middle School community for being the only school in NY State this year to be named a 2016 Essential Elements School to Watch.  ​In a letter to Dr. Ferris, Marybeth Casey, the New York State Department of Education's  Essential Elements: School To Watch Director, wrote, "this prestigious designation recognizes your continued commitment to enhancing your school program and practices. You have developed a model educational program in New York State that is consistent with the Regents Policy Statement on Middle Level Education, the Essential Elements of a Standards Focused Middle Level School, and the National Forum’s Schools to watch criteria.” READ MORE

At the February 25th North Shore Board of Education meeting, North Shore Schools Superintendent Dr. Ed Melnick (left) explains the accolades the North Shore Middle School and its Principal Dr. Marc Ferris (center) had received during the previous week as Assistant Principal Rachel Green (right) applauds.  In addition to the Middle School being the only school in the state designated as a National and Statewide "School to Watch" (see article above), Dr. Ferris was recognized as the 2016 Middle School Principal of the Year by the Council of Administrators and Supervisors.  The prestigious Administrator of the Year awards are given annually to only three or four Long Island administrators - each at a different educational level - Elementary, Middle School, High School, or district-wide. NS SENIOR DIANA VIZZA - 2016 NEW YORK STATE INDOOR 1500M CHAMP AT NYSPHSAA CHAMPIONSHIP

North Shore High School Senior Diana Vizza won the New York State Public High School Class B Championship in the indoor 1500 meters this past Saturday, March 5, coming across the finish line in a time of 4:31;67.  It is Ms Vizza's second state championship victory this year, having won the Class B Cross Country crown this past December. CLICK HERE FOR VIDEO ON MILESPLIT FROM SATURDAY'S RACE

NORTH SHORE SENIOR TAKES 3RD PLACE AT THE JUNIOR SCIENCE HUMANITIES SYMPOSIUM AT YORK COLLEGE

The North Shore School District is proud to announce that Anne Marchildon, a senior at North Shore High School, was invited to the semi-finalist stage of the LI Region Junior Science Humanities Symposium (JSHS) competition at York College in February 2016. Of the hundreds of research papers submitted, Anne’s was among 37 biological semi-finalists in New York City and Long Island. Her research teacher, Dr. Molly Mordechai, said, “We were excited to recently learn that Anne came in third place for her research presentation titled,Inhibition of the Protein Kinase MRK Sensitizes of Glioma Stem Cells to Radiation.” READ MORE

March 3, 2016 --With competing signs lining the walls of the City Council Chamber - some declaring “Stop the Queensification of Glen Cove” and others “We Support the Villa" - about 100 residents and business owners from Glen Cove and nearby communities turned out for a public hearing this past Tuesday evening at which the Glen Cove Planning Board took community input regarding a site-plan and subdivision application for the Villa Project - a 176 unit condominium complex that the Queens-based Livingston Development Company has proposed to build on a 4 acre site it owns on the east side of Glen Cove Avenue just south of the Glen Cove Boys and Girls Club.  READ MORE  

NORTH SHORE BOARD OF EDUCATION BEGINS INTERVIEWING FIRMS FOR NEW SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH

March 1, 2016 -- At its February 25 meeting, the North Shore Board of Education began the process of finding a replacement for Superintendent Dr. Edward Melnick when he retires at the end of the 2016-17 school year, conducting the first of five public interviews with school administrator search firms.
"Process matters,"said Dr. Berliner reading a statement before the interview began, and outlined the procedures the board would follow in selecting a search firm. All five firms, he explained would be asked the same questions by board members, so as to insure as best as possible "an objective process" with a "level playing field."  READ MORE


NORTH SHORE HIGH SCHOOL MUSICIANS RETURN FROM HISTORIC CUBA TRIP

March 2, 2016 -- 71 North Shore High School music students in the band, orchestra and chorus along with their teachers recently returned from a life-changing trip to Cuba.  The historic public school performance tour came at the threshold of 21st Century global change as Cuba opens its doors to the United States. This year, the music department at North Shore High School was one of the first schools in the United States to perform in Cuba since the U.S. lifted the embargo at the end of 2015. Additionally, it came at the same time as North Shore celebrates its 10th anniversary performance tour.  READ MORE

His photography will be on view at the library for March and April. Most works will be accompanied by the poetry of John C. Bartul. The exhibition Kenny Scharf opens at Nassau County Museum of Art on Saturday, March 19 and remains on view through July 10, 2016. The exhibition is sponsored by TAHARI Arthur S. Levine.   Emerging with the New York City graffiti and street art movement of the 1980s, Kenny Scharf (b. 1958) is known for his vibrantly colorful large-scale paintings and exuberantly playful installations. His imagery draws upon pop icons, media advertising and consumer culture of the 1960s, including TV cartoon characters such as the Flintstones and the Jetsons. READ MORE

TEENS GOTTA BELIEVE  FUNDRAISER TO BE HELD AT NORTH SHORE HIGH SCHOOL ON APRIL 2ND.

Please join North Shore High School junior, Ryan O’Day and friends for the Teens Gotta Believe Basketball & Track Event on Saturday, April 2, 2016 from 1-6pm. It will be held at North Shore High School 450 Glen Cove Avenue Glen Head, NY. The event is to support teens in and aging out of foster care through the You Gotta Believe organization.
NY Times best selling author of Etched in Sand, Regina Calcaterra will be the guest speaker followed by a 3v3 basketball tournament and track clinic and event. There is a $20 registration fee for participants of the sporting events and the ages range from 6th grade to adult. Drinks and snacks will be provided. There is no registration of fee for the speaking engagement, donations will be accepted at the door. It is sure to be a great day!
