SEA CLIFF VILLAGE BOARD ELECTION ON TUESDAY, MARCH 21; CONTESTED FOR FIRST TIME IN FIVE YEARS

For the first time since 2012, there will be a contested election for the Sea Cliff Village Board with two of the four Trustees seats and the office of Mayor on the ballot.  Incumbents Dina Epstein, who was first elected in 2015, and Jeff Vitale, who was appointed to the Board by Mayor Ed Lieberman this past December, as well as Village resident Deb McDermott are seeking election to two year terms as Trustees. Mr. Lieberman, who was appointed this past November when Mayor Kennedy stepped down to take the Village Administrator position, is running unopposed to win that office in his own right.  Long time resident Joe Krupinsky has announced that he will be running for trustee as a write in candidate. On Tuesday, March 14, the Sea Cliff Civic Association will be hosting a "Meet the Candidates" forum at St. Lukes Church on Glen Avenue in Sea Cliff that will begin a 8 pm.  Voting will take place at Sea Cliff's Stenson Memorial (Children's) Library on March 21 from 12 noon until 9 pm.   Below are statements submitted to Northwordnews by the candidates.  (The last contested election? TRUSTEE CANDIDATES (at large election - two positions up for grabs)

DINA EPSTEIN
Sea Cliff Civic Progress Party
Picture
I have had the honor of serving as Trustee for the past two years.  However, I have been volunteering on behalf of Sea Cliff for the past sixteen years in roles that range from Zoning Board Chair to Staff Appreciation Luncheon Chair.  In that time I have learned a lot about how our Village is run, have worked with extraordinary people and, I believe, have accomplished much for Sea Cliff.  I am running for a second term as Trustee because there is still more that I can do. DEB McDERMOTT
Sea Cliff Open Government Party
Picture
My running for Trustee has made this a contest, an opportunity for all candidates to put in their best effort, and it also is serving as a tool for engaging our community in questions about how we want to move forward. I have a different background, experience and community ties from the other candidates. My expertise is in communications and would serve the community by helping to bring more openness and transparency to our government. I have two kids in Sea Cliff School and many of my friends are also parents of young children.  READ MORE

JEFF VITALE
Sea Cliff Civic Progress Party
Picture
A 32 year (lifelong) resident of Sea Cliff, I grew up on 8th Avenue with my parents Bill and Kathy as well as my older brother Mark (the current Fire Chief for the volunteer Sea Cliff Fire Department) and my younger sister Lynn. I am engaged to my girlfriend of 10 years, Hayley Hoffman who is also a lifelong resident. We met in kindergarten at Sea Cliff Elementary and remained good friends throughout the years. After college we began dating and I couldn’t be happier. She is the best thing that has ever happened to me. READ MORE

MAYOR

EDWARD LIEBERMAN (running unopposed)
Picture
I am grateful to Northwordnews for the opportunity to present this statement to its readers on the occasion of our village's upcoming March 21 election.       I am currently serving as your mayor and, most respectfully, seek your vote of support so that I may  continue in this fiduciary  role for the next 2 years.  I seek your endorsement in order to further provide every resident a claim to  the vision that is our mutual love of Sea Cliff.
I believe that being your mayor has placed me in a position where I am able to bring my professional experience and community service background to use for the betterment of our beloved Village.
My professional education and experience as a criminal defense attorney has provided me a unique perspective in advocating on behalf of  those whose rights and liberties are jeopardized. READ MORE

To the Editor:

I am wring to endorse the candidacy of Ed Lieberman,Dina Epstein and Jeff Vitale in the upcoming election.     Ed is currently our mayor and has provided great leadership as Mayor Kennedy's deputy.  Dina has wide experience in our village, first serving as a member and then chair of ZBA; she is running for reelection to the trustee position in which she has been serving. DEB McDERMOTT HAS EARNED MY VOTE

Received from Gwynne Lennon, Sea Cliff
March 2, 2017

Dear Editor,

I can't remember the exact time we met Deb and Dan McDermott because I feel as though they have lived in Sea Cliff forever. Like Mike and I, they may always be newcomers compared to those lucky enough to grow up here. But, Deb and her family have fit perfectly into the fabric of life in Sea Cliff beginning the day they moved into their home. Deb is ready to bring her enthusiasm for Sea Cliff to the office of trustee. READ MORE

Dear Editor,

As a Sea Cliff resident, I feel very fortunate to have Deborah McDermott as a candidate for Village Trustee this year. Deb has had a big impact on our Village in the 12 years that she has lived here. VOTE DEB McDERMOTT FOR SEA CLIFF VILLAGE TRUSTEE

Received from
Carol Kennedy Speranza, Sea Cliff

February 28, 2017

To the Editor:

It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I endorse Deb McDermott for Village Trustee! While teaching at Sea Cliff School, I knew Deb as a parent. She was caring, committed and involved as well as respected by the school community. During my tenure, she was a positive voice in all areas of school life. Always wanting to be informed, she attended School Board meetings, PCA meetings, and was always willing to advise the principal when asked for her opinion. Deb is running for all the right reasons!   READ MORE

DEB McDERMOTT FOR SEA CLIFF VILLAGE BOARD

Received From Kathleen Reynolds, Sea Cliff
March 1, 2017

To The Editor:

It gives me great pleasure to endorse Deborah McDermott as a candidate for Sea Cliff Village Trustee. I have known Deb for four years and I feel privileged to call her my friend.
Besides being friends, Deb and I worked together on the campaigns for two successful elections of Trustees to the North Shore School District Board of Education. A natural leader, Deb organized us, guided us and kept us all informed about campaign timelines and the do’s and don’t’s of grassroots campaigning (including the SC Village rules regarding flyers!). She will bring this same enthusiasm and integrity to the role of Village Trustee.  READ MORE

FOUL - OUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK

Received From Dan Maddock, Sea Cliff
March 1, 2017

To the Editor:

The Sea Cliff Bulletin is printed and mailed to every household in Sea Cliff using tax dollars. But that didn’t stop the administration from loading it with plugs for incumbents. Phil Como is currently heading the Civic Progress Party, but he’s given a front page article on how wonderful the status quo is in Sea Cliff. The Mayor’s Update on page one gives a plug to the sitting Trustees. The Election Day announcement gives the wrong day for the election! Does that favor incumbents? READ MORE

WHY DEB McDERMOTT MATTERS

Received from Mike Lennon, Sea Cliff, NY
March 3, 2017

Dear Editor,

Twenty-six years ago my wife Gwynne and I started the annual Sea Cliff to Montauk camping trip. Over the years literally thousands of young, Sea Cliff residents have shared in this remarkable experience. This past summer, sensing it was time to find someone capable of relieving us of this demanding responsibility Deb McDermott, along with her husband Dan, readily volunteered and now the tradition will continue on for many more years to come.  READ MORE

THE GREAT BOOK GURU

ANN DIPIETRO

IS IT ALL IN YOUR HEAD

Dear Great Book Guru,  Last weekend, I attended a startlingly beautiful opera I was unfamiliar with: Dvorak’s “Rusalka”. Based on a Czech fairy tale of water sprites and human royalty,  this work has the most romantic music I have ever heard.  While waiting for the second act to begin, I overheard a group of people discussing a new book reviewed on NPR about psychosomatic illnesses. It sounds fascinating.Have you read it?

COMPOSTING IS EASY AND WORTHWHILE

Picture
By Dina Epstein

Garbage is expensive.  Not only have you already paid to purchase whatever you are throwing out, but you will also be paying to dispose of it. The cost to the Village of disposing Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is $85.00 per ton and we generated 2700 tons last year.   That means the village paid about $230,00.00 to take out the trash.  There is also the cost to the earth when you consider that the trash is likely going into a landfill which will generate air, soil and water pollution.  If only there was a way to save your tax dollars and be kinder to the earth. Stepping Stones Lighthouse was built in 1876 to warn mariners of a shoal and extensive rocks that extend into Long Island. The lighthouse itself is in poor condition, and needs to be repaired.  If it decays any further, there is a strong probability that it will be demolished, and a navigational beacon erected in its place.  Learn about efforts to restore this important piece of local history.
