SEA CLIFF DESIGNATES FIRST HERITAGE TREE

Picture
At the Monday, February 8 Sea Cliff Village Board meeting, Trustee Dina Epstein presents John Bryant of Laurel Avenue in Sea Cliff with a certificate designating the 64 inch diameter (at chest height) Red Oak on his property a "Heritage Tree."  The magnificent specimen is estimated to have sprouted in 1790 - when George Washington was President!  Residents can request that the Village Board issue the special designation for trees only on their own property and that, according to new village tree ordinance passed last spring, "are important based on their location, rarity, size, and/or aesthetic, botanical, ecological and/or historical value." Such trees, like class three trees that are more than 20 inches in diameter, require a Village permit to remove. Mr. Bryant's tree is the first in the village to receive the designation.

Picture
February 17, 2016 -- At a "Town Meeting" last Wednesday February 10 at the Henderson Avenue Polish Hall in Glen Cove, former Nassau County Executive and Glen Cove Mayor Tom Suozzi, who is now mulling a bid to seek the Democratic nomination for the 3rd Congressional District seat being vacated by Representative Steve Israel, presented himself to the nearly 150 people in attendance as a pragmatic politician who can reach across the aisle and get things done.  Mr. Suozzi, who has formed a committee to explore running for the office, said he would hold similar meetings around the District, and make a decision by March 7 as to whether he would in fact throw his hat in the ring.  Citing the gridlock in Washington and the corruption in Albany, "what's clear to me, " Mr. Suozzi explained, "is that people are sick of politics and sick of politicians."  READ MORE

THINKING GLOBALLY ACTING LOCALLY

Picture
Five students from the North Shore High School Environmental Club and their advisor addressed the school board on Thursday February 11 urging the district to adopt a recycling program.  They said they would get the ball rolling by placing recycling bins in each of the classrooms, and promote their use through a public relations campaign.  In the past, they said, such a program did exist, and that in 2010, the school managed to recycle 20 tons worth of material.  Dr. Melnick said that the program had been eliminated due to costs charged by carting company, but that he would work with the Environmental club in an effort to re-establish the program.
