FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

Posted - January 14, 2015 -- It’s a pretty good bet that that as the North Shore School Board and Superintendent begin going through the first budget draft next week and during the subsequent months of budget discussions, the words "fiscally responsible" will be tossed around quite a bit. Unfortunately, these days that expression has too often become a misapplied synonym for “keeping taxes as low as possible.” As we go through the budget process, the community and its elected representatives should not conflate the two - especially in the era of the "2% tax cap," a misnamed New York State mandate that each year actually encourages fiscally responsible school districts to push the tax levy to the legal limit, when it might otherwise not be necessary or desirable to do so.  READ MORE

PLAN B FOR ANIMAL SHELTER NEEDED

Received from Carol Ruth Weber,
Glen Cove
January 15, 2014

To the Editor

I am saddened and perplexed that Mayor Spinello has severed a longstanding relationship between our City and Joan Phillips, our friend and neighbor, who has long dedicated herself to caring for and protecting unwanted pets in our community.

Joan and her volunteers at the Animal Lovers’ League deserve the thanks of all of us for their outstanding service and for being the champions of our fellow creatures who cannot speak for themselves. READ MORE

January 16, 2015 -- Schools Superintendent Dr. Edward Melnick presented his initial budget outline at the North Shore Board of Education meeting on Thursday evening.  The $97,851,848 proposal represents an increase of 2.09%  over the current budget, and a tax levy increase of $1,459,619, or 1.66%, over this year - $239,897 below what would be allowed under the projected New York State imposed tax cap.   With the tax levy under the limit, Dr. Melnick stated that it would once again make residents eligible for the tax reimbursements that they received this year.  READ MORE

PARENTS URGE NORTH SHORE BOE TO CONSIDER POLICY CHANGES IN AFTERMATH OF PTO CONTROVERSY

January 21, 2015 -- At this past Thursday’s North Shore Board of Education meeting, a Sea Cliff parent, whose 11-year old daughter was a target of criticism in an email sent out to hundreds of parents and posted on a community facebook group early last week, as well as in a letter sent to a fundraising vendor in October, requested that the Superintendent and seven Trustees take action to change district policy so as to protect all students from having their names and other information shared publicly  or with third parties by parent organizations.  The father’s request came at the end of a lengthy statement he made just a few minutes after a Middle School PTO co-President announced her resignation from the parent group’s board, and had asked district leaders to amend district bylaws to include parent volunteers among those who are protected under the district’s anti-harassment policies.
