THE JOY OF BIRDS IN THE WINTER

Picture
Birds, beautiful birds. Not only a sight to behold, but also a joy to hear in the garden or on the front porch……actually anywhere. An entire hobby has been dedicated to catching a glimpse of these acrobats as they glide through the trees and air. We need birds as they are a member of our ecosystem and not only for amusement. Birds have specific purposes which help us not only in our daily living but also in the gardens. These graceful flyers will and do eat insects. So putting aside the song, the chatter, the skilled flying and the beauty, they like bats, will eat insects. Birds however are not the efficient insect eating flying machines that bats are. So how can we attract and keep birds on our property, no matter how many bugs they will eat during the warmer months? READ MORE

NS SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT PROPOSES 2.63% SPENDING INCREASE FOR 2017-18

Picture
January 15, 2017 -- At a meeting of the North Shore Board of Education on January 12, Schools Superintendent Dr. Edward Melnick presented his initial budget proposal for the 2017-18 school year.  The $102,113,514.86 spending plan represents a 2.63% spending increase over the current year and would be paid for without exceeding the tax cap that New York State imposes on school districts and municipalities. The revenue side of the budget, however, is still a bit murky with precise figures for PILOTs and state aid not yet available.  The "inflation factor," used to calculate the district's tax levy limit was not released by the comptroller's office until the week following Dr. Melnick's presentation.  READ MORE

PictureArtist's rendering of the proposed CVS
January 18, 2017 -- At a public hearing on January 12, the Town of Oyster Bay Zoning Board of Appeals heard arguments for and against granting a variance for large illuminated signage at a new CVS store that is to be built adjacent to Bottle Buys on Glen Head Road between Cedar Swamp and Glen Cove Roads.  If granted, the variance would allow for two pylon signs twenty feet tall to be set closer to Glen Cove Road and Cedar Swamp Road than code allows, and for each to have a surface area of 114 square feet, exceeding the 32 square feet of surface area that is allowed under the Town of Oyster Bay zoning code.  READ MORE

The North Shore Votes!
The exhibit showcases a variety of political memorabilia and historic photographs that illustrate the many ways North Shore residents have participated in local, state and national politics. Political brochures, election guides and a garden of lawn signs complement the historical passages in this exhibit that extends beyond the political campaign to the citizen groups that work behind the scenes, and it also highlights the accomplishments of the many people who have answered the call to serve the community.
