SCHOOL TAX LEVY TO RISE BY LESS THAN HALF A PERCENT; CAPITAL RESERVE PROPOSITION TO ALSO BE ON BALLOT THIS MAY

Picture
January 16, 2016 -- Schools Superintendent Dr. Edward Melnick offered a brief presentation of his initial budget outline at the North Shore Board of Education meeting this past Thursday evening. The $99,494,105 proposal represents an increase of 1.96%  over the current budget, and a tax levy increase of $381,333 or 0.4%, over this year - within the tax cap established by New York State.  The "growth factor" that is determined by the State to calculate each district's individual  tax levy limit, Dr. Melnick said, will be near 0% because of the past year's very low inflation rate.  Additionally the Board will put before voters in May at the time of the budget vote a proposition allowing for the establishment of a capital reserve fund.  READ MORE

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

RECORD SHOWS A LONG HISTORY OF MANY VOICES OPPOSING CURRENT GARVIES POINT PROPOSAL

Received from Roger Friedman, Sea Cliff

January 23, 2016

Dear Editor,
I am writing in response to the letter to the Editor in a recent issue of the Record Pilot entitled, “If Nothing Else They’re Consistent”.

The writer opines that the voices in opposition to the current Waterfront plan and the Villa are just a rag-tag group of naysayers that oppose change of any kind, and “rail against everything regardless of its merits”. He believes that they don’t want the Piazza to succeed and that they are defeatists who have filed bogus lawsuits that seek only to delay, not stop the projects.

This letter misses the mark…and not by a little.  READ MORE. . .
