Received from Sarah Deonarine on December 13, 2016

To the Editor:

The holiday season is here with its obligatory relative visits, holiday parties, and unfortunate dietary decisions, so it is important to make sure your cesspool or septic system (collectively called home wastewater systems) can handle the extra load.  Luckily, homeowners have a resource for information on this issue with the newly launched GetPumpedLI.org website (if you live in a north shore community, you may have received an informational post card).

WHAT'S THE BUZZ...AND IT'S THE BEES

Picture
"We cannot win this battle to save species and environments without forging an emotional bond between ourselves and nature as well - for we will not fight to save what we do not love"
Stephen Jay Gould
We often read about bees and how they are endangered. The importance of these mostly yellow and black insects that hover over flowers and frighten our children, cannot be stressed. Some of us are allergic to their stings and we keep a wide berth with nature’s pollinators. However, except for this limited downside they are important to our very well being. READ MORE

O' CHRISTMAS TREE O' CHRISTMAS TREE MUCH PLEASURE THOU CANST GIVE ME

Hundreds of holiday season merrymakers packed the John Burns Village Green for Sea Cliff's annual Christmas Tree Lighting  on Sunday December 4.  As has been tradition, Village emcee John Canning officially  kicked the festivities off with an introduction and an a cappella version of “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of Year,”  while Sea Cliff Gospel Church Pastor David Collins offered a blessing and read the Christmas Story from the Gospel of Luke.  Local guitarist and songstress Kris Rice led in the singing of Christmas Carols, while a local youth choir led by Leslie Pride Haley and the Kick Brass Band warmed the crowd with their renditions of holiday classics.  As the celebration reached its culmination the multicolored lights on the thirty foot spruce in front of the library steps were lit and Santa and Mrs. Claus descended the library steps distributing candy canes and taking orders.

Exhibit will run through February 18 with regular museum hours:  Wednesday 2:00-6:00 and Saturdays 11:00-3:00.
The North Shore Votes!
The exhibit showcases a variety of political memorabilia and historic photographs that illustrate the many ways North Shore residents have participated in local, state and national politics. Political brochures, election guides and a garden of lawn signs complement the historical passages in this exhibit that extends beyond the political campaign to the citizen groups that work behind the scenes, and it also highlights the accomplishments of the many people who have answered the call to serve the community.
