PUBLIC HEARING ON PROPOSED REPLACEMENT OF GLEN HEAD WATER TOWER TO BE HELD ON JANUARY 12

Picture
The Town of Oyster Bay Zoning Board of Appeals will be holding a public hearing regarding NY American Water's application for a variance to install a new water tower at 6 Dumond Place in Glen Head.  Glen Head resident Carol LoMastro has launched a petition drive to block the construction of the new tower, and instead urges the water company to refurbish the existing one which she says will cost less than 20% of the $5 million proposal for a concrete cylinder tower.  Click here for link to Ms. DeMastro's petition.  The Thursday, January 12 Public Hearing will be held in the Oyster Bay Town Hall meeting room at 7 pm.

GOOD NEWS FOR SCHOOL DISTRICTS AS BUDGET SEASON NEARS

PictureThe Superintent presents last year's budget
January 2, 2016 -- North Shore Schools Superintendent Dr. Edward Melnick will be giving his initial budget presentation for the 2017-18 school year at the Thursday, January 12 Board of Education meeting.   The spending plan is being developed at a time of declining teacher pension costs and a rising inflation growth factor which is used to figure each individual school district's tax levy limit.  Both developments should somewhat ease financial pressures on school districts across New York State. To the Editor:

I wish everyone a healthy and happy new year. As many of you know, I was privileged and honored to become the 35th Mayor of our beloved village of Sea Cliff last November when the Board of Trustees selected me to fulfill the unexpired term of Mayor Bruce Kennedy upon his resignation.

I look forward to this new office of service to the people of Sea Cliff.  I will endeavor always to continue to earn your trust and confidence.

WHAT'S THE BUZZ...AND IT'S THE BEES

Picture
"We cannot win this battle to save species and environments without forging an emotional bond between ourselves and nature as well - for we will not fight to save what we do not love"
Stephen Jay Gould
We often read about bees and how they are endangered. The importance of these mostly yellow and black insects that hover over flowers and frighten our children, cannot be stressed. Some of us are allergic to their stings and we keep a wide berth with nature’s pollinators. However, except for this limited downside they are important to our very well being. READ MORE

POLAR BEARS PLUNGE INTO FRIGID SEA CLIFF WATERS IN NEW YEAR'S DAY RITUAL

January 2, 2017 -- Undeterred by the sign warning "BEACH OFFICIALLY CLOSED -  BATHING PROHIBITED," and with the air temperature hovering at a balmy 47 degrees, and the sea temperature at 41 (9 degrees cooler than last year!), 15 brave souls sprinted from the Sea Cliff Beach pavilion and plunged into Hempstead Harbor on Sunday afternoon.  A majority of the polar bears, after dunking themselves, quickly hightailed it back to shore, while a few frolicked in the water for two or three minutes. About six times as many stood bundled on the beach or pavilion cheering, chuckling, and filming, with perhaps a few thinking, "maybe next year," but most probably, "no way, never." Sponsored by the Sea Cliff Polar Bears and Coalition to Save Hempstead Harbor, residents Elizabeth and Charlie Weinstein have organized the New Year's Day ritual for more than 20 years now.  Photos by Ann DiPietro and Northwordnews.

Exhibit will run through February 18 with regular museum hours:  Wednesday 2:00-6:00 and Saturdays 11:00-3:00.
The North Shore Votes!
The exhibit showcases a variety of political memorabilia and historic photographs that illustrate the many ways North Shore residents have participated in local, state and national politics. Political brochures, election guides and a garden of lawn signs complement the historical passages in this exhibit that extends beyond the political campaign to the citizen groups that work behind the scenes, and it also highlights the accomplishments of the many people who have answered the call to serve the community.
