THE GREAT BOOK GURU

ANN DIPIETRO

Dear Mr. M

Dear Great Book Guru,  What a wonderous Sea Cliff weekend  awaits us!  On Sunday December 4 at 3pm we have the Scrooge Stroll -a reenactment of Charles Dickens’s CHRISTMAS CAROL as we walk through the streets of Sea Cliff Village with playwright Frederick Stroppel as Dickens himself, Dan DiPietro as Scrooge and a merry troupe of  costumed Sea Cliff actors playing all the other roles. Then at 5pm  everyone gathers in front of the Adult Library to celebrate the lighting of the Village Christmas Tree. Do you have something for me to read while waiting for these festivities to begin?

WHAT'S THE BUZZ...AND IT'S THE BEES

Picture
"We cannot win this battle to save species and environments without forging an emotional bond between ourselves and nature as well - for we will not fight to save what we do not love"
Stephen Jay Gould
We often read about bees and how they are endangered. The importance of these mostly yellow and black insects that hover over flowers and frighten our children, cannot be stressed. Some of us are allergic to their stings and we keep a wide berth with nature’s pollinators. However, except for this limited downside they are important to our very well being. So how can we help this critical part of our environmental network?

November 25, 2016 -- With arms linked, North Shore High Schoolers Oscar Varela, Jack Rosencrans, and Colin O'Sullivan crossed the finish line first in a time of 18:27 in this year's North Shore Community Youth Organization's annual Turkey Trot held this past Thanksgiving morning.  More than 300 participants of all ages, most running but others moving at a more leisurely pace, turned out for the five kilometer race that began on Glen Head Road in front of Holiday Farms and continued through the streets of the hamlet past the elementary school and then northward into the hilly Promenade neighborhood, and eventually back to the Community Center where trotters were greeted by cheering family and friends at the finish line.  The top women's runner, with a time of 21:47.7, was Emily Uhrynuk, of Glen Head. The event was organized by the High School Track and Field coaches Neil Levy and Ed Corona and North Shore Community Youth Organization Executive Director Mike Capobianco.

ANNUAL TURKEY HUNT ATTRACTS RAFTERS OF RESIDENTS

Well over 100 residents of all ages turned out to track turkeys at the Sea Cliff Civic Association's  fifth annual Headless Park Turkey Hunt last Sunday afternoon.  Members of the Sea Cliff Youth Council hid 300 rubber birds, set up refreshments and collected canned goods for Mutual Concerns.  To the delight of all, the Great Turkey, the plucky Poobah of Poultry himself, undaunted by the park's ominous nickname, once again made a grand appearance and posed for polaroids with his fans. "A wondrous turnout of turkeys, tots and teens capped by a visit from the Great Turkey himself," said Civic Association President Ann DiPietro. The event was chaired by Civic Association Board Member Heidi Hunt.

The North Shore Votes!
The exhibit showcases a variety of political memorabilia and historic photographs that illustrate the many ways North Shore residents have participated in local, state and national politics. Political brochures, election guides and a garden of lawn signs complement the historical passages in this exhibit that extends beyond the political campaign to the citizen groups that work behind the scenes, and it also highlights the accomplishments of the many people who have answered the call to serve the community.
