A HOMECOMING FOR CHINESE ART AT THE NASSAU COUNTY MUSEUM 

November 26, 2014 -- This past Friday evening, the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn Harbor held its opening reception for China: Then and Now.  The exhibition explores three millennia of Chinese art - each through a different medium. The exhibition's curator, Amy G. Poster, who is Curator Emerita, Asian Art of the Brooklyn Museum, explained that the  show is a sort of homecoming for many of the pieces which had been a part of the private collections of prominent Long Island collectors Childs and Frances Frick whose Roslyn Harbor property and mansion are now home to the Museum, and Dr. Arthur M. Sackler, who had lived in Searingtown before his death in 1987.  READ MORE


MIDDLE SCHOOL'S E3 DAY ENCOURAGES KIDS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

November 26, 2014 -- Acting on its motto, "Everyone Matters, Everyone Cares, Everyone Learns," North Shore Middle School held it annual E3 Day on Tuesday, a Thanksgiving week tradition that promotes community service and civic mindedness.

During the day-long event, students participate in one of more than a dozen service opportunities, from singing and performing at the Glen Cove Senior Center, to raking leaves at a local park, to raising funds for cancer research in a Dance-a-Thon. READ MORE

SC BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE BEGINS HOLIDAY PREPARATIONS

This past Thursday, the Sea Cliff Beautification Committee continued its preparations for the upcoming winter holiday season, with a bow-tying meeting.  For the second time, Beautification members spent the morning at Marga Crowley's home tying more than a combined 100 large red bows that will be attached to wreaths adorning lampposts along Sea Cliff Avenue and other areas of the village this December and January.  On Tuesday December 2nd,   the group will be holding its annual wreath-tying party at the Department of Public Works facility on Altamont Avenue at 10:00 a.m.  All Sea Cliff residents are invited to get into the Christmas spirit with seasonal music and refreshments while decorating wreaths for display in the village.

THE GREAT TURKEY HIMSELF APPEARS AT 2nd ANNUAL HEADLESS PARK HUNT

More than 30 families' worth of tots turned out to track turkeys at the Sea Cliff Civic Association's  second annual Headless Park Turkey Hunt this past Sunday afternoon.  For the first time, in what will no doubt become tradition, the Great Turkey, the plucky potentate of poultry himself, undaunted by the park's ominous nickname, made a grand appearance, 

SCHOOL BOARD DISCUSSES LATER START TIME FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

November 24, 2014 -- At last Tuesday evening's Board of Education meeting, the seven School Board Trustees and Schools Superintendent Dr. Edward Melnick discussed the advantages and obstacles to having a later start time for high school students.  While all appeared to accept the validity of the research regarding sleep and academic performance, there was some disagreement over whether or not to move forward with further studying the logistics of such a change, and whether North Shore ought to act independently or work with other districts.  READ MORE


SC CHILDREN'S LIBRARY TO RELOCATE TO WINTER HOME AS RENOVATIONS ARE COMPLETED

November 25, 2014 -- The Sea Cliff Children's Library will migrate north this winter to meeting room C on the second floor of Village Hall, as the Stenson Building undergoes renovations.  . . . 
The move has already begun and over the course of this and next week, DPW workers will be relocating shelving, books, tables and chairs into storage in the basement of the main library and the Piano to the DPW garage on Altamont.  READ MORE

Students of all three North Shore Elementary schools and the Middle School, will blend their voices with the North Shore Community Chorus (NSCC), under the direction of Stephen Goldstein, in a richly inspiring holiday concert onSaturday, December 13, 8:00 p.m., at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Glen Cove. Organist, Timothy Carl, and the Island Chamber Symphony, directed by Jeremy Kempton will accompany the combined choirs.  READ MORE
