Gem Craft Boutique, open since June 2012, was inspired by similar shops in Soho and represents the fruition of owner Deborah Orgel-Gordon's life's work experiences, from helping out her mother as a young girl in a Ridgewood jewelry shop to her 16 years as a travel consultant that gave her the opportunity to "discover fabulous finds to share with customers and friends."  It is that enjoyment of sharing new discoveries that has given rise to the boutique's eclectic mix of offerings.  READ MORE

CHINA THEN AND NOW AT NASSAU COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART OPENING ON SATURDAY

China Then and Now brings together exemplary Chinese works of art from the classical, early modern and contemporary periods. The exhibition explores three millennia of one of the world’s most important artistic traditions from the perspective of American collectors on Long Island, such as Childs and Frances Frick and Dr. Arthur M. Sackler. The exhibition opens at Nassau County Museum of Art on November 22, 2014 and remains on view through March 8, 2015.  READ MORE

NORTH SHORE VIKING MASQUERS PRESENT THE MUSICAL RENT

The North Shore Viking Masquers present "Rent" the Pulitzer-prize winning rock musical set in New York City's lower east side in the 1990s.  An updated version of the opera "La Boheme,"  the musical tells the story of young artists struggling to survive at the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis. Performances are Friday and Saturday, November 21 and 22 at 7:30 p.m.with a matinee at 2 on Saturday.  READ MORE


RESIDENT PETITIONS NYS EDUCATION COMMISSIONER TO INVALIDATE THIS PAST MAY'S BOARD OF EDUCATION ELECTION 

November 20, 2014 -- A Glenwood Landing resident has petitioned New York State Commissioner of Education John King to invalidate this past May’s North Shore Board of Education election - a vote in which more than 2,400 residents participated.  The petition, obtained by Northwordnews  through a  Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) request to the New York State Department of Education, was filed by Christine McDonough and received by State Ed on June 20.  Alleging that “unfair” conduct kept candidate Robert Mazzella from winning one of the two open seats on the School Board, Ms. McDonough requests a re-vote, or that Trustee Joanna Commander, who finished first in the balloting, be removed from the Board and Mr. Mazzella awarded the position. . .  
According to the three School Board election voter poll lists FOILed by Northwordnews, Ms. McDonough was not among the more than 2400 residents who cast ballots in the election that she is challenging. . . .  READ MORE

November 20, 2014 -- Noting the organization's tremendous growth over the past year, Glen Head Glenwood Business Association President Tucker Tongue said at this past Wednesday's monthly meeting, "I think its time for a name change."  The GHGWBA's umbrella now covers not only its namesake hamlets but also Greenvale and nearby areas of Glen Cove as well as Sea Cliff, which alone has 22 members. Students of all three North Shore Elementary schools and the Middle School, will blend their voices with the North Shore Community Chorus (NSCC), under the direction of Stephen Goldstein, in a richly inspiring holiday concert onSaturday, December 13, 8:00 p.m., at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Glen Cove. Organist, Timothy Carl, and the Island Chamber Symphony, directed by Jeremy Kempton will accompany the combined choirs.  READ MORE

You can make a special one for a child living at the Ronald McDonald House! For your efforts, you will receive a community service certificate! The program takes place Friday, November 21st from 4:30-5:30pm.

POSITIONS OPEN FOR NS SCHOOLS LAC

The North Shore Board of Education is looking for members to join the Legislative Action Committee (LAC), the Citizen’s Advisory Committee of the Board for the purpose of serving as a liaison between the community and our Trustees regarding legislative matters that have a direct bearing on fiscal or educational aspects of the North Shore Central School District. 

If you are interested in becoming a member of LAC, please submit an application to the District Clerk, Betty Ciampi, byWednesday, November 25, 2014 to the Central Office (112 Franklin Avenue, Sea Cliff, New York, 11579). Applications can be picked up in the Central Office or online on the North Shore Schools website at www.northshoreschools.org (under the Board of Education/LAC section).
