STATE SENATE CANDIDATE JIM GAUGHRAN TALKS EDUCATION, CORRUPTION, AND ENVIRONMENT AT LOCAL MEET AND GREET

Picture
September 29, 2016 -- "My opponent doesn’t think there’s a problem, but I do,” said Jim Gaughran, the Democratic Party’s nominee for the New York’s 5th Senate district seat, describing Albany at a “meet and greet” hosted by Glen Head resident Veronica Rock at her home on Friday, September 23.  Mr. Gaughran, a Northport attorney and chairman of the Suffolk County Water Authority, who last held elective office during the early 1990’s when he served as Suffolk County Legislator after four years on the Huntington Town Board, is challenging 22-year incumbent Republican Carl Marcellino (Oyster Bay) in this November’s election to represent the Senate district that encompasses the North Shore of Long Island from Hempstead Harbor to Northport. BOE PUNTS ON ATHLETICS ABOVE ALL ELSE ATTENDANCE POLICY

Despite its charge to “concern itself with questions of policy,” the North Shore School Board has sidestepped that responsibility with its unwillingness to publicly discuss and consider the appropriateness of the Athletics Department interscholastic sports team attendance policy. . . . The policy is inflexible and, in many cases, the penalty draconian, and it is very questionable as to whether it is representative of the values of the community and the district as a whole.   READ MORE

Received from
Linda & Helge Langerud, Glen Cove

Our neighbor on Hammond Rd (approximately 2/3 Glen Cove and 1/3 Sea Cliff) had a chicken coop constructed and housed chickens in 2015 and 2016 on the Glen Cove portion of her property with failure to adhere to existing laws. READ MORE

BAT HOUSES AND BATS AND YOU

Summer and mosquitos and more summer and even more mosquitos. All the time… 24/7..day and night. Yes, the mosquitos have become unbearable. So what to do? Solutions that do not include soaking the planet in chemicals. Well, the answer lies in BATS! Native to Long Island but mostly disliked due to the fear of rabies, their creepy habit of sleeping upside down and those rather formidable black wings. Of course there are always vampires and Dracula who have unfortunately given these mammals a bad name. But what are they really? READ MORE

ANOTHER PARENT QUESTIONS FAIRNESS OF ATHLETICS ATTENDANCE POLICY

October 10, 2016 -- During the public comment period at this past Thursday evening’s BOE meeting, a district parent appealed to the board to change a North Shore High School Athletic Department policy that mandates that a JV or Varsity student athlete who has three unexcused absences from practices be expelled from the team.  It's the third time in the past few months that a parent has expressed concerns about the inflexibility of the policy and severity of the punishment.  READ MORE

SEA CLIFF CELEBRATES SEA CLIFF WITH ANNUAL MINIMART

The morning overcast sky and spritz of rain eventually gave way to a spectacular early autumn day on October 2 as thousands from near and far turned out for this year's Sea Cliff Mini Mart.  And keeping with tradition, politicians schmoozed,  bands performed, and the pumpkin draught flowed, as residents and visitors strolled down Sea Cliff Avenue browsing and buying the wares of  more than 200 vendors selling everything from hand-crafted jewelry and Sea Cliff T-shirts, to colorful autumn wreaths and jars of honey to toys and Halloween costumes.  The street fair, sponsored by the North Shore Kiwanis Club and held annually for 47 years,  featured live music in front of the Fire House and local businesses as well as on some porches, driveways, backyards, and even in a barn, while local restaurants and bars offered fine food and autumn-themed thirst quenchers. And the two greatest Presidents from the once Grand Ol' Party's glorious past, as well as current candidates for state and federal office, both Democrat and Republican, in the dash to election day, only a month a way, worked the crowds, as election workers distributed bags emblazoned with bumper stickers and held signs in proud support.

FAREWELL TO A SEA CLIFF VOLUNTEER

Picture
By Cecilia Wheeler
Barbara Murray, the Managing Editor of the Sea Cliff Bulletin since 2009, has handed in her red pen and retired from the volunteer position of producing the quarterly publication that we have all come to depend on for updates from the Mayor to photos of the Little League. The key word in that sentence is volunteer! Yes, unbeknownst to most of us, she did that unpaid job out of her love for the Village of Sea Cliff and her desire to do more than her paid part-time job as Deputy Court Clerk.

In the steamy heat of July in New York, before air-conditioning, Democratic delegates met in 1924 to nominate the Party's presidential candidate. Divisions within the Party became apparent. Finally on the record-breaking 103rd ballot, they selected John W. Davis. Considered a "dark horse", Davis was an attorney living In Lattingtown near the border with Glen Cove. The North Shore of Long Island, the "Gold Coast", was a topic in the campaign. John W. Davis lost to Republican Calvin Coolidge.
