MANY COMMUTERS SKEPTICAL OF LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD PROPOSAL TO USE SCOOT TRAINS ON OYSTER BAY LINE

October 3 -- 
On Tuesday evening, State Assemblyman Charles Lavine held a community meeting with Long Island Railroad officials at the Bryant Library in Roslyn to discuss the proposed initiative to use so-called "scoot" service to shuttle commuters between the Oyster Bay and Mineola stations. . . .Under the proposal, the LIRR would run shuttle trains between Oyster Bay and Mineola at 30 minute intervals throughout the day.  Commuters, would then transfer in Mineola to catch a direct train to either Penn Station, or Hunterspoint Avenue in Queens.  READ MORE


NORTH SHORE SCHOOL DISTRICT HOLDS BOND INFORMATIONAL SESSION

October 5 -- At a Tuesday, October 1 meeting in the high school library, North Shore Schools Superintendent Dr. Edward Melnick presented information to residents concerning the  $19.6 million dollar bond that will be put up for a public vote on Tuesday, Dec. 3. 

After introductions, Dr. Melnick explained to the audience the reasoning behind putting up the bond at this particular time and gave an overview of the process used by the district for determining what projects would be included in the proposal. READ MORE

DRIZZLE DOESN'T DAMPEN MINI MART MERRIMENT AS SEA CLIFF STREET FAIR ATTRACTS THOUSANDS

Despite overcast skies and an occasional light drizzle, thousands turned out for the 2013 Sea Cliff Mini Mart. Artisans and retailers peddled their wares; beer flowed freely from street kegs and at the local bars and restaurants; the scents of sausage and peppers and zeppoles wafted through the damp air;  and people were dancing in the streets to music performed by local musicians and bands like Title Groove, the Lazy Dogs, and Chickenhead.  READ MORE

LOCAL ARTIST LARRY AARONS' "THE MYTHS OF MAN" OPENS AT GOLD COAST LIBRARY

On Sunday, October 6, the Gold Coast Library hosted an art show and opening reception for Glen Head artist Larry Aarons' exhibit of pastel portraits, "The Myths of Man."

. . . Mr. Aarons uses strong contrasts of light and dark in his drawings - a method known as Chiaroscuro, which gives the figures a warmth and three-dimensionality that brings them to life.  READ MORE

EINS, ZWEI, DREI G'SUFFA! OKTOBERFEST COMES TO ST. BONIFACE CHURCH 

Lederhosen were in fashion on Saturday night at St. Boniface Church in Sea Cliff, as the Bavarian fall festival, Oktoberfest, was celebrated. The event featured a three piece Oom Pah band playing festive folk songs, dancers dressed in traditional Bavarian garb, dining tables extending the length of the hall, a smorgasbord of German food, and of course, bier.  Ein Prosit, ein Prosit, Der Gemütlichkeit. Eins, zwei, drei, g'suffa!

THE PUMPKIN PATCH IS BACK

October 4 -- For the 10th consecutive year, the United Methodist Church of Sea Cliff is holding its Pumpkin Patch and Fall Festival Fundraiser.  A week ago, volunteers unloaded 3,000 pumpkins and spread them about the church's lawn, creating a spectacular field of orange at the corner of Downing and Carpenter Avenues in Sea Cliff. . .  READ MORE
