December 1, 2013 -- On Sunday morning, approximately 130 runners of all ages turned out for the 2013 North Shore Turkey Trot. The five kilometer race began on North Street near the Waldbaum's Shopping Center and took runners through the streets of Glen Head past the elementary school and across Glen Head Road into the hilly Promenade neighborhood, and then back out onto Glen Head Road and into the Community Center parking lot to the finish line.
The top runner with a winning time of 18:08.5 was Brian Michalak, 18, of Glen Head, who narrowly eclipsed Peter Dayre, 16, in a sprint to the tape by .6 seconds. In the Women's division, Stacie Nadel, 16, crossed the finish line first, at 20:20.9, and Diana Vizza, 15, crossed 5 seconds later.
Prior to the 5k event, about a dozen young people competed in the Kids Fun Run, which was held on the fields behind the Community Center. As the bicyclist leading the runners through the course made its appearance around the final turn, 8-year old Christopher LaMarca of Sea Cliff was only a step or two behind..
While Turkey Trots have been held in past years at the high school, this was the first time the event was held on this course, and the first North Shore Trot that was entirely a road race.
The principal organizers of the event, North Shore Boys and Girls Club President, Michael Capobianco and North Shore High School Track and Field coaches Neil Levy and Ed Corona were very pleased with the way this year's event worked out, and were appreciative of the job done by the Nassau County Police Department in keeping the runners safe from traffic. They said the event will no doubt be held again next year, but most likely, as Turkey Trots are traditionally run, on Thanksgiving morning.
