RELAY FOR LIFE OF NORTH SHORE RAISES OVER $100,000 FOR AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY

June 9, 2014 -- After several months of preparation, and with a fundraising goal of $100,000, Relay for life of North Shore 2014 held its culminating event at the high school field this past Saturday evening.

Cancer survivors, caregivers and several hundred supporters turned out to memorialize loved ones who lost their lives to cancer, and to honor those who have survived their battle with the disease.

Members of the 34 relay teams participating in the event camped out on the high school soccer field ringed by 1000 luminarias - paper bag lanterns, each paying tribute to a friend or loved one who has been afflicted by cancer - and throughout the night, took turns lapping the rectangular track.

By morning Relay North Shore had met its initial objective of $100,000, and found itself only $18,000 short of meeting it's long-term goal of raising $1 million over an 8 year period.

After this weekend's event, Relay for Life of North Shore director Megan Stewart, said that she expected that goal to be met this summer.  "We expect to still reach our goal of $118,000. If the participants that have signed up on our website can raise an extra $63 then we can do it!  You can actually still donate until the end of August so we do still have time," she said.

"North Shore has been a leading Relay For Life event in Nassau County since its beginning its 2007 and has sky rocketed each year with more teams, survivors, caregivers, Luminaria bags, love, support and determination to reach a day where cancer no longer exists," Ms. Stewart said, "North Shore will continue to fight and to Relay until this day is possible and we, at the American Cancer Society, could not be more proud to have them as partners in this fight!"
