BOE DISCUSSES SOCIAL STUDIES CHANGES AND ATHLETICS ATTENDANCE POLICY AT 10.20 MEETING

Picture
8th grader Kate Wesley-Jones receives a firm handshake from Superintendent Ed Melnick, as mom and School Board Vice President Sara Jones looks on, for being a semifinalist in the Broadcam Masters Middle School Stem Competition.  Only 300 students of the 6,000 who entered the national competition received the designation. Ms. Wesley-Jones' entry, A Graph is Worth 1,000 (Misleading?) Words, examined how truncation of the y-axis on a graph affects viewers interpretation of the results of the graph. This practice is often used by the media and in politics to mislead the viewer by misrepresenting the data or statistic being shown. Ms. Wesley-Jones also earned second place at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair for her research project.

FAREWELL TO A SEA CLIFF VOLUNTEER

Picture
By Cecilia Wheeler
Barbara Murray, the Managing Editor of the Sea Cliff Bulletin since 2009, has handed in her red pen and retired from the volunteer position of producing the quarterly publication that we have all come to depend on for updates from the Mayor to photos of the Little League. The key word in that sentence is volunteer! Yes, unbeknownst to most of us, she did that unpaid job out of her love for the Village of Sea Cliff and her desire to do more than her paid part-time job as Deputy Court Clerk.

SCHOOL DISTRICT LIKELY TO SEEK APPROVAL FOR BOND ISSUE IN 2017

Picture
September 8, 2016 -- At last Thursday’s public meeting, North Shore Schools Superintendent Dr. Edward Melnick recommended to the School Board that it put before voters in December 2017 a bond proposal to fund infrastructure improvements and renovations to buildings that would help support instruction - in particular upgrades that would enable the district to create “21st Century Classrooms.” He cited an upcoming drop in debt service costs and his retirement at the end of this school year, as well as the importance of maintaining and upgrading district facilities as the nature of instruction changes, as reasons for this being the appropriate time to begin the year-long process of identifying district needs and deciding what projects ultimately will be included in the proposal.  READ MORE

Imagine yourself, sitting on the Sea Cliff Beach dock. You lie down and look at the horizon and the pretty beaches and trees. You feel peace within you.

Now imagine yourself sitting on the same dock. You look sideways and instead of those beautiful beaches and trees you see buildings. Tall, big, red brick buildings. Whatever happened to your view? SEA CLIFF CELEBRATES SEA CLIFF WITH ANNUAL MINIMART

The morning overcast sky and spritz of rain eventually gave way to a spectacular early autumn day on October 2 as thousands from near and far turned out for this year's Sea Cliff Mini Mart.  And keeping with tradition, politicians schmoozed,  bands performed, and the pumpkin draught flowed, as residents and visitors strolled down Sea Cliff Avenue browsing and buying the wares of  more than 200 vendors selling everything from hand-crafted jewelry and Sea Cliff T-shirts, to colorful autumn wreaths and jars of honey to toys and Halloween costumes.  The street fair, sponsored by the North Shore Kiwanis Club and held annually for 47 years,  featured live music in front of the Fire House and local businesses as well as on some porches, driveways, backyards, and even in a barn, while local restaurants and bars offered fine food and autumn-themed thirst quenchers. And the two greatest Presidents from the once Grand Ol' Party's glorious past, as well as current candidates for state and federal office, both Democrat and Republican, in the dash to election day, only a month a way, worked the crowds, as election workers distributed bags emblazoned with bumper stickers and held signs in proud support.

It is that philosophy that led the four members of the Sea Cliff-based band in 2012 to create Girls Rising, a not-for-profit organization that seeks to empower girls and LGBT youth by not only setting an example that “strong girls and members of the LGBT community exist and have much to contribute to culture,” but to work directly with both young women and men to instill that positive attitude through outreach programs and workshops.  READ MORE

REGION'S COMMON CORE TEST SCORES, IF ANYTHING, A MEASURE OF AFFLUENCE

Picture
August 7, 2016 -- The New York State Department of Education released the English Language Arts and Math Common Core examination scores for grades 3-8 on July 28, and, as has been the trend for the past several years, North Shore School District students scored significantly higher on average than students across the state and county, and more or less in the middle of   school districts along the north shore of Nassau County - some among the most affluent in the state.  However, the large number of "opt outs" this year, with 45% of North Shore's students boycotting the tests, and the obvious relationship between affluence and performance call into question the reliability of using the scores to evaluate how well the district prepares its students for the exams compared to others; and the questionable validity of the exams themselves - how well schools actually educate their children.  READ MORE

June 28, 2016

To the Editor:

In regards to the Waterfront Development one major point that’s being missed is that the opposition is not anti-development.

We are for cleaning up the site, we are for the development of the site.  We applaud the EPA and the DEC for their work to date and, as we’ve stated at the public meetings, we hope they will continue to remediate until it is completely cleaned up and there is absolutely no danger to human health. . . . In observance of Bloomsday, the anniversary of the day the literary masterpiece Ulysses takes place, nearly three dozen local literati turned out for the Sea Cliff Civic Association's James Joyce Jaunt this past June 16.  Adapted for the Sea Cliff “stage” by residents Fred "the Maestro" Stroppel and Dan DiPietro, and directed by Mr. Stroppel, the performance provided Ulysses neophytes and aficionados alike with an absorbing retelling of Leopold Bloom’s passage through the city of Dublin on June 16, 1904 that parallels that of Homer’s hero Odysseus (Ulysses in Latin) during his ten year journey home in the epic Greek poem. Perhaps Joyce's message, Mr. DiPietro offered, is that "each of us has our own epic journey even in a single day,"READ MORE

SEA CLIFF SCHOOL OBSERVES FLAG DAY

Gathered around the flag pole in front of Sea Cliff School, students, faculty and community members observed Flag Day on Tuesday, June 14.  Principal Chris Zublionis opened the ceremony with a moment of silence to reflect on those that have given their lives to protect and advance the opportunities of Americans, and then offered some historical background on the origins of the design of the American flag - starting with Betsy Ross and continuing to explain the significance of the colors: white - purity and innocence;  red - valor and bravery;
blue - Vigilance, perseverance, and justice

Sea Cliff resident Phil Como addressed the audience as well.  "Flag Day celebrates our great country by its great symbol -the flag," he said.  "Celebrate today, take advantage of citizenship and the great country and great opportunities it offers."

The Sea Cliff Band performed their most extensive concert of the year, playing an assortment patriotic and inspirational pieces - including, of course, The Star Spangled Banner.

LOCAL BOY SCOUTS HAVE A WHITE WATER RAFTING ADVENTURE

Picture
 By Boy Scout Gabriel Dranow:

On May 13 through May 15, 2016, Boy Scout Troop 43 (Sea Cliff, New York) traveled to White Haven, Pennsylvania, about a three hour trip from Sea Cliff, to go white water rafting. While there, the Boy Scouts camped out at a local campground. The weather generally held up until the last third of the rafting adventure (which was several hours long) at which time it started to pour, but neither the waves nor the rain could stop the Troop from their journey. The Troop wore wetsuits, which were rented from the rental center and prevented them getting wet and cold. We went down the Lehigh River, which had rapids causing the rafts and passengers to become airborne. Everyone in the troop had a really good time, from the newest Scouts to the adult leaders.
