DIVIDED GOVERNMENT IS NOT DIVISIVE - IT’S DEMOCRACY

The mission and work of the Sea Cliff Civic Progress Committee has no doubt been a great service to Sea Cliff and its residents over the past seven decades as it has met and deliberated each winter to nominate many outstanding members of the community to serve in Village government. But as the March 20th Sea Cliff Village Board of Trustees election approaches, let us recognize the benefits that Village residents have reaped from divided government this past year.
Responding to the game of musical chairs in Village leadership positions that occured out of public view during the fall of 2016 and to the apparent lack of transparency of village government in a variety of areas, several residents organized the Sea Cliff Open Government Party and tapped resident Deb McDermott to be its candidate in last March’s Village Board election. Presenting the first real challenge in nearly a decade to the Civic Progress Committee, which had chosen all village board members for the previous seven elections, nearly all of which were uncontested, Ms. McDermott received the overwhelming support of the community.  READ MORE

WHAT'S WRONG WITH SEA CLIFF?

Received from Robin Kennedy, Sea Cliff,
March 13, 2018

To the Editor:
Last year a group of people who claim to love Sea Cliff and want to keep it great formed a group called Sea Cliff Open Government Party. Their platform is transparency, participation & collaboration.
What puzzles me is how they think Sea Cliff became the beautiful, non pretentious village that it is. We are people who live together peacefully and work together to maintain a feeling of community and calm. READ MORE

To the Editor:                                 Choice - a simple concept with complex ramifications. Some choices are easy, with little to no impact on your life and can be made without thought or consideration: vanilla or chocolate; coffee or tea. More often, choices have larger implications and require more than a knee jerk response. Important choices call for careful consideration of the relative merits of the options offered.  READ MORE

ALL IN FOR KEVIN AND HENRIETTE

From Fred Eisenstein, Sea Cliff
March 14, 2018

To the Editor:
I am writing this letter in strong support of the Civic Progress slate of highly trusted Trustee Kevin McGilloway, and new candidate, Henriette Rohl, a star member of Sea Cliff’s own farm-team of energetic and committed volunteers. I’ve been a resident and more-than-casual observer of Sea Cliff doings for over 35 years.  If you’re somewhat new to Sea Cliff, you may not know that behind every Civic Progress trustee is a deep bench of volunteers.  They’re sitting on boards and committees, (wo)manning our museums, music and events.  READ MORE

TIME FOR NEW FACES, IDEAS AND ENERGY ON THE VILLAGE BOARD

Received from Maximo Büschfrers, Sea Cliff
March 9, 2018

To the Editor:

My wife bought our first house and moved to Sea Cliff twenty years ago.  Sea Cliff is a beautiful and secluded Village where life is almost idyllic, a place where all is well until you decide it’s time to do work on your house.  I know this well, I’m an Architect.  There is a fundamental problem at the building department, the people in charge never held this position before.  This is a problem that has been going on for years.  These are hard working and dedicated people doing their best to learn on the go, but the ones that pay the price for their inexperience are the residents of this Village.  I brought this problem up to the attention of the Mayor and the Trustees in different occasions only to be ignored. SUPPORT GOVERNOR'S EARLY VOTING PROPOSAL

Received from Emily Reiger, Sea Cliff
February 20, 2018

To the editor,

I am a young Sea Cliff resident and I am writing to you because I am concerned with the lack of voter turn out in New York state. I noticed that governor Cuomo included early voting in his 2018 budget plan, which would be a great first step in fixing this issue. Although New York prides itself in being a progressive state, it is the forty first in the country when it comes to voter turn out, largely because the polls are open for one day. This one-day voting system makes it extremely difficult for working people and students who essentially must choose between work or school, and making it to the polls on time. READ MORE

I’m supporting Terryl Donovan for Sea Cliff Trustee because she has the skills the Village needs to plan, budget and manage in a fiscally responsible manner.  Her career in government service has prepared her to understand not only the minutia of policies and procedures but also to work with colleagues and other stakeholders in a transparent and open environment that encourages ideas, collaboration, and change to make systems and procedures better. Her resume is impressive and aligned with the values many of us share.  READ MORE

TWO BALLOT QUESTIONS REQUEST  APPROVAL FOR CHANGE TO BUSING MILEAGE LIMITS AND CAPITAL RESERVE EXPENDITURE

Picture
In addition to the 2018-19 budget proposal, there will be two other propositions on the ballot this May 15.  The first seeks approval to reduce transportation mileage limits to one mile for students in grades 9-12.  Currently, students in the high school must live 1.5 miles from the high school in order to receive busing. The District has stated that the change will not result in any additional cost.
A second proposition seeks approval to expend $3,443,911.91 of the Capital Reserve Fund for district-wide projects.  The creation of the reserve was approved by voters in 2016, and withdrawal of funds likewise requires a permissive referendum. The following projects will be undertaken:  installation of air conditioners in the library at Glen Head Elementary School and Glenwood Landing Elementary School; installation of air conditioning in the cafeteria at Glen Head Elementary School, Sea Cliff Elementary School and North Shore Middle School; installation of air conditioning the Glenwood Landing Elementary School auditorium; installation of air conditioning in the North Shore High School gymnasium; replacement of the entire cafeteria ceiling and installation of new LED lights at the North Shore High School.  If after the foregoing expenditures, monies remain, they will fund supplemental projects which may include installing exhaust fans in hallways and stairwells at the Sea Cliff Elementary School, and installing windows in second floor hall at the Sea Cliff Elementary School.  Costs of the foregoing include labor, materials, equipment, apparatus, and incidental costs.

Story provided by Boy Scout Troop 43
- Danny Roper, 12 of Glenwood Landing NY, was out on a boat on Long Island Sound last August with his two friends and the father of one of the boys.  When one of his friends jumped in for a swim, the tide quickly pulled him away.  The boy removed his life preserver in order to try and swim better and the situation suddenly became life-threatening. Danny assisted in rescuing his friend with a lifesaving ring, but when the boy's father jumped into the water to help his son, he was pulled away as well.  Alone on the boat, Danny and his friends called for help and waved down a passing vessel to help rescue the father as well.  Both the boy and his father fully recovered from the near-drowning.

The Boy Scouts of America reviewed the incident and voted to award Danny Roper of Troop 43-Sea Cliff the National Certificate of Merit for his heroic actions.  Danny was honored by his fellow scouts, Scoutmaster and family at a special troop ceremony.

READ MORE

March 11, 2018

To the Editor:

I’m supporting Terryl Donovan for Sea Cliff Trustee because she has the skills the Village needs to plan, budget and manage in a fiscally responsible manner.  Her career in government service has prepared her to understand not only the minutia of policies and procedures but also to work with colleagues and other stakeholders in a transparent and open environment that encourages ideas, collaboration, and change to make systems and procedures better. Her resume is impressive and aligned with the values many of us share.  READ MORE
