June 6, 2017, Glen Cove, NY…The Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department will celebrate their 180th anniversary and all members of the Glen Cove community are encouraged to participate in the important community event.
“Early on our North Shore community developed a vibrant local industry and with that came the growth of a small group of citizens who organized a fire watch.” said Chief Philip Grella Jr. “Today, that group has now grown to a 180-year-old fire department with over 100 diverse firefighters that all remain 100% volunteer to this day.”
The City of Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department will be celebrating its 180th Anniversary which kicks off at the Annual Fifth Battalion Parade & Drill on Saturday June 17, 2017, that will include fire departments from Bayville, East Norwich, Glenwood, Locust Valley, Oyster Bay, Roslyn, Sea Cliff, and Syosset. “This is a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate 180 years of the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department’s commitment to the safety of our city,” said Mayor Reggie Spinello.
The Drill Tournament, in which teams of firefighters representing their departments compete in various old fashioned fire-fighting techniques, will take place at Tappen Beach in the Village of Sea Cliff, at 10:00 a.m. The Parade will start at 6:00 p.m. from the Finley Middle School and march through School Street in downtown Glen Cove and culminate with a celebration in the vicinity of the Glen Cove Firehouse on Glen Cove Avenue. The local band Chicken Head Rocks will provide live entertainment for a special community celebration that will follow the parade.
The celebration will include a wide variety of entertainment for children such as a bouncing castle and fire truck slide. There will also be several foods available for purchase including hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage and peppers, chicken fingers, Ralph’s Italian Ice and beverages from the Garvies Point Brewery. Fifth Battalion T-Shirts will be available for a donation. The celebration is free and parking is available in the Glen Cove Parking Garage located on Brewster Street. Portions of streets will be closed to traffic during the Parade and Charles Street will be closed from 5 p.m. to 12 a.m.
