The New York State department of Education will be field testing common core assessments this coming June to help the test making corporation Pearsson develop questions for future tests. At the May 8 North Shore Board of Education meeting, Dr. Melnick stated that 45 minute field tests for the exams would be administered at , and the at the Middle School. He explained that there would be no consequences to the district or to students who opt out of the exams. However, he continued, that principals could be faced with losing their administrative licenses for refusing to administer the exams. At least four districts have indicated their intention to refuse administering the exams. They are Jericho, Manhasset, Rockville Centre, and Glen Cove. At this past Thursday’s meeting, Dr. Melnick stated that he believed administering the exam would give teachers an opportunity to see what sort of questions are asked.
Many parents have expressed their intention to boycott the test. Sea Cliff parent L stated she believed that students ought to be paid by Pearsson. After all, she said, in psychological research, it is standard practice to pay subjects a stipend for participating in testing or study.
