The Gilbert and Sullivan Yiddish Light Opera Company performs its acclaimed production ofThe Mikado, Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular comic opera, on Wednesday, June 15 at 7:15 p.m. at Congregation Tifereth Israel (CTI) in Glen Cove. W. S. Gilbert, the lyricist and book writer, set this hilarious satire in Japan with Japanese characters, a device that allowed him to more freely skewer British officials and institutions. Der Yiddisher Mikado will be performed with Yiddish lyrics and English dialogue. This Yiddish Light Opera Company production “…recreates the rich traditions of Yiddish theater in America,” according to the Baltimore Jewish Times
Starring in the role of Yum Yum, or in Yiddish, Tsipe Tsviele, is Glen Cove’s own Carly Baron, a soprano who studied voice and opera at Muhlenberg College and Florence University of the Arts. In addition to the Gilbert and Sullivan Yiddish Light Opera Company, Carly has also sung with the Utopia Opera, Schola Cantorum on Hudson and Schola Repertory Singers ensembles. She is a winner of the Meistersingers German Lied Vocal Competition and the Collegiate Aria and Art Song Category of NATS. Carly is the daughter of Barbara and Jay Baron of Glen Cove.
Explaining her interest in Yiddish, Carly said that she is the granddaughter of a fluent Yiddish speaker and teacher. She has been singing in Yiddish since middle school when she performed for three years with the National Yiddish Theatre-Folksbiene’s Kids and Yiddish. Carly is thrilled to be reconnecting with her past as a Gilbert and Sullivan Yiddish Light Opera Company cast member!
