WRITING CENTER LAUNCHED AT NORTH SHORE HIGH SCHOOL
By Shelly Newman
On September 28, 2015, North Shore High School launched its new Writing Center under the direction of Mrs. Ritter (English Department Teacher Leader), Mrs. Devlin (English Teacher), and Dr. Kirmser (English teacher). Mrs. Ritter said, “Our new Writing Center supports writers at all levels and across all disciplines through one-on-one conferencing. The goal of the conferences is to enable students to grow as writers.” At the Writing Center, 12th grade Writing Fellows will act as tutors using questions and collaboration to help their peers through the various stages of the writing process. The tutoring sessions are interactive exchanges aimed at creating better writers. Rather than emphasizing only editing and proofreading or merely drafting specific writing samples, the sessions will focus mainly on meaning, development, and the organization of ideas. The eighteen student tutors were accepted as Writing Fellows after completing a rigorous application process. In addition, they prepared for their grand opening by attending a comprehensive day-long training session facilitated by Mrs. Ritter, Mrs. Devlin, and Dr. Kirmser. “All are poised and excited to help North Shore HS students build the skills they need to grow as writers” exclaimed Mrs. Ritter. North Shore High School students are invited to visit the Writing Center in the library during period 0, 4, 5, 6, and 7 for help with all stages of the writing process. Walk-ins are welcome and students may make appointments online at https://nshswc.acuityscheduling.com/.Students seeking help should bring their assignment sheet, rubric, checklist, and all necessary materials.
