August 7, 2016 -- Weeks after the City of Glen Cove narrowly approved a “creative financing” plan to fund infrastructure improvements and the construction of public amenities at Garvies Point, the proposed mixed use project on Glen Cove Creek that includes two 12-story buildings and 1100 residential units, both the Glen Cove School Board and the Nassau County legislature heard from supporters and opponents of the proposal at their respective meetings on Monday August 1 as they considered a consent resolution that would decrease their share of the revenue generated by the property.  Both bodies ultimately postponed a vote on the proposal.  READ MORE

OPINIONS

GOODBYE VIEW

by Caroline Winchester, age 9
Sea Cliff

Imagine yourself, sitting on the Sea Cliff Beach dock. You lie down and look at the horizon and the pretty beaches and trees. You feel peace within you.

Now imagine yourself sitting on the same dock. You look sideways and instead of those beautiful beaches and trees you see buildings. Tall, big, red brick buildings. Whatever happened to your view? It’s not even peaceful anymore. All you hear are the honking of car horns and shouting customers. What happened?  READ MORE

THE KITCHEN HERB GARDEN

Historically the garden adjacent or right outside of the kitchen door was the herb garden which had both culinary and medicinal plantings. You could find this in monasteries or farmsteads in both Americas as well as the Old World and has a very long tradition. And a tradition worth carrying on.  READ MORE

SUMMERSTRINGS! BOWS TO WOMEN OF ROCK

Picturephoto by Noah Barker
By Elizabeth Winchester

August 10, 2016 -- It is one thing to think about an orchestra playing with a rock band. It is another to experience it.

“It’s like being in the ocean with the waves lifting you up and setting you down,” explains Nini Camps, lead singer of the all-female band Antigone Rising. “The sheer number of stringed instruments played by living, breathing, feeling humans creates an energy unlike any other stage experience. Sometimes you just want to sit in the middle and let the music wash over and through you.”

REGION'S COMMON CORE TEST SCORES, IF ANYTHING, A MEASURE OF AFFLUENCE

Picture
August 7, 2016 -- The New York State Department of Education released the English Language Arts and Math Common Core examination scores for grades 3-8 on July 28, and, as has been the trend for the past several years, North Shore School District students scored significantly higher on average than students across the state and county, and more or less in the middle of   school districts along the north shore of Nassau County - some among the most affluent in the state.  However, the large number of "opt outs" this year, with 45% of North Shore's students boycotting the tests, and the obvious relationship between affluence and performance call into question the reliability of using the scores to evaluate how well the district prepares its students for the exams compared to others; and the questionable validity of the exams themselves - how well schools actually educate their children.  READ MORE
