NORTHWINDS TO CELEBRATE THE STARS AND STRIPES AT CLIFTON PARK ON SUNDAY

June 7, 2016 -- In a salute to the Stars and Stripes, the Northwinds symphonic band will perform a showcase of patriotic standards, Broadway and movie pieces, marches, and other classics during its annual Flag Day concert this Sunday, June 12th at Clifton Park in Sea Cliff.  The ensemble, under the direction of Helen Bauer, has for nearly a decade entertained audiences across Long Island, and stars about 70 talented musicians from the area. They come from many stripes, ranging in age from ten to 80. . . This year’s local performance of The Silly Shakespeare Company, will open the beach performance season with its production of Richard The Nerd on June 11, 2016, at the Sea Cliff Beach Pavilion, at 7:00pm. Bring a beach chair or blanket for ya bum.  This year’s production is a re-written version of Shakespeare’s Richard The Third (a political play) with the concept that Richard, an evil man of power who is in line for the throne, uses his nerdy and conniving smarts to out play his political opponents until a horse fails to save him, recalling the famous line “A horse, a horse, a kingdom for a horse.”  READ MORE

THE SEA CLIFF FARMERS MARKET IS BACK THIS SATURDAY

The Sea Cliff Farmer’s Market is back for the 2016 season at its home at St. Luke’s Church! (On the corner of Glen Ave and Roslyn Ave.)  Opening day will be June 11th, and the market will contine each Saturday (except July 2) through the end of October, from  9 AM to 1 PM.  The Sea Cliff Farmers Market offers ALL organic produce from some very local farms. Also, Heritage Bakers will once again be back with their fresh baked organic breads.  Please visit the Sea Cliff Farmers Market Facebook page for updates and upcoming special events and guest vendors. Follow on  Twitter and Instagram!

SEA CLIFF SPRINGFEST THIS SUNDAY, JUNE 12

The Sea Cliff Arts Council will hold its fourth annual Springfest this Sunday, June 12th from 11am to 5pm.  The street fair, on Sea Cliff Avenue between Roslyn and Main, will feature more than two dozen craft artisans and fine artists displaying and selling their work, as well as representatives from many of Sea Cliff's community groups publicizing what they do and looking for volunteers.  Local restaurants and bars will, of course, be open and serving, and there will be fun activities for kids on Roslyn Ave.  Musical entertainment for all ages will include: Jenn Gerrity & kids, Frank Ferrara & kids,  Silly Shakespeare, Max Ross and Gadfly, and the Daily Routine.   

HONORING A WWII VETERAN

​William Swift was presented with a Proclamation of Honor by the town of Oyster Bay for his WW11 service.
Serving in the Navy, he took part in the D-Day operation and later was present at the invasion of Iwo Jima.
Bill, soon to be 93, resides in Glenwood Landing and is a member of the Glen Head/Glenwood Landing American
Legion, Post 336. Shown above are
​(l to r) Commander Bill Laderer, Bill Swift, and Chaplain Ralph Casey. 
Bill was also recognized as a WW11 hero at a Veteran's fund raising event held at the Brookville Country Club in May.

OUTSTANDING NORTH SHORE STUDENT RECEIVES COMPTROLLER'S ECONOMICS ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Mineola, NY- Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos personally awarded the Comptroller’s Achievement Award for Excellence in Economics and Finance to two seniors: Bennett Parker of North Shore High School and Ross Solomon of Locust Valley High School. The award ceremonies were held on May 17 in Glen Head and May 18 in Locust Valley. In his remarks, Comptroller Maragos congratulated the class of 2016 on completing their high school studies and encouraged students to continue excelling in their future endeavors.  Each year, Comptroller Maragos recognizes one graduating senior at each Nassau County high school for his or her outstanding accomplishments in the areas of economics, and finance.  Awardees are invited to apply for paid internships at the Comptroller’s Office during their college years.

NS BOE VOTES TO REMOVE RUBBER MULCH FROM DISTRICT PLAYGROUNDS

June 3, 2016 -- At its public meeting last night, the North Shore Board of Education voted unanimously to allocate $500,000 towards the removal of the rubber mulch that has served as a protective ground cover for the three district elementary school playgrounds and to replace the material with wood chips.  The decision comes after several parents, citing potential health risks to children, had spoken at the three previous board meetings and hundreds of residents had signed a petition urging district leaders to take the action.  READ MORE

​June 7, 2016 -- Jacob Lando loves to play the drums, trumpet, piano, and to sing. On June 5, the 13 year old combined his musical interests with his love of dogs and gratitude for veterans to support a meaningful cause. Jacob hosted a benefit concert—Rock ‘n’ Roll for the Soul—at Still Partners in Sea Cliff, raising awareness of and money for America’s VetDogs. The national non-profit organization trains and provides service dogs to veterans, to help them live independently.  READ MORE

SEA CLIFF OBSERVES MEMORIAL DAY WITH IMPROMPTU CEREMONY 

After meteorologists' dire predictions of stormy weather forced the cancellation of the Sea Cliff Memorial Day Parade and those forecasts ultimately did not materialize, Mayor Bruce Kennedy organized an impromptu service at Memorial Park to honor those who gave their last full measure of devotion to this country.  A couple dozen residents, who had seen the Mayor's Monday morning Facebook post announcing the ceremony, turned out for the tribute.   (Photographs by Ann DiPietro)

People come in crying," explains co-owner Christine Bannano describing some of her clients who have shown up at one of the Fairy LiceMother's locations panicked and at a loss over what to do when that unwelcome louse is found in a child's scalp.  "And then they leave saying, 'best money I ever spent, I am so happy I came here, I feel so much better."  Fairy LiceMothers, a head lice treatment center, held its grand opening celebration for its Glen Head location this past Friday afternoon.  The event was sponsored by the Glen Cove Chamber of Commerce.  READ MORE

June 6, 2016 -- Books were flying off the shelves at the Friends of the Sea Cliff Library “Giant Gently Used Book Sales,” at “Garage Day Sale” on Saturday, June 5, 2016. The book sale is a major fundraiser and community event where people come to share their love of the library, reading, and books and spend time with their friends.  Many hundreds of books, DVDs and CDs are donated and sold.  The great success of the book sale is one more  indicator of the love the Village has for the library. The Civic Association is planning a program that will include ringing the village bell, the presentation of colors, a short play about the signers of the Declaration, refreshments and much more.  As has been the tradition, the highlight of the morning’s event will be a reading of the Declaration of Independence by a variety of Sea Cliff villagers but this year the Civic Association will also be adding something new.

May 21, 2016 -- The Sea Cliff Arts Council hosted an opening reception for an exhibit featuring the works of  Sea Cliff artist Frederick Giner at the Sea Cliff Library last Wednesday evening. The Watercolors, charcoal sketches and pen and ink pieces span 70 years, from a 1945 monochrome of Louis Armstrong trumpeting to vibrantly colorful 21st century seascapes. READ MORE
