BLOOMSDAY IN SEA CLIFF: BAWDY, BUBBLY, BOISTEROUS & BOUNCY

In observance of Bloomsday, the anniversary of the day the literary masterpiece Ulysses takes place, nearly three dozen local literati turned out for the Sea Cliff Civic Association's James Joyce Jaunt this past June 16.  Adapted for the Sea Cliff “stage” by residents Fred "the Maestro" Stroppel and Dan DiPietro, and directed by Mr. Stroppel, the performance provided Ulysses neophytes and aficionados alike with an absorbing retelling of Leopold Bloom’s passage through the city of Dublin on June 16, 1904 that parallels that of Homer’s hero Odysseus (Ulysses in Latin) during his ten year journey home in the epic Greek poem. Perhaps Joyce's message, Mr. DiPietro offered, is that "each of us has our own epic journey even in a single day,"READ MORE

DEATH IN THE GARDEN

In each garden there are unloved, unwanted plants. They arrive silently, settle in, set up roots and begin to take over your landscape. Nonnative plants are particularly skilled at this strategy or the “takeover” of your garden. For years, gardeners used chemicals as a means of controlling "the weeds", which has led to adverse results. This included the decline of beneficial insects, animals as well as the inadvertent poisoning of adjacent plants. And also the harm to your physical well being needs to be considered.  READ MORE

SEA CLIFF SCHOOL OBSERVES FLAG DAY

Gathered around the flag pole in front of Sea Cliff School, students, faculty and community members observed Flag Day on Tuesday, June 14.  Principal Chris Zublionis opened the ceremony with a moment of silence to reflect on those that have given their lives to protect and advance the opportunities of Americans, and then offered some historical background on the origins of the design of the American flag - starting with Betsy Ross and continuing to explain the significance of the colors: white - purity and innocence;  red - valor and bravery;
blue - Vigilance, perseverance, and justice

Sea Cliff resident Phil Como addressed the audience as well.  "Flag Day celebrates our great country by its great symbol -the flag," he said.  "Celebrate today, take advantage of citizenship and the great country and great opportunities it offers."

The Sea Cliff Band performed their most extensive concert of the year, playing an assortment patriotic and inspirational pieces - including, of course, The Star Spangled Banner.

LOCAL BOY SCOUTS HAVE A WHITE WATER RAFTING ADVENTURE

Picture
 By Boy Scout Gabriel Dranow:

On May 13 through May 15, 2016, Boy Scout Troop 43 (Sea Cliff, New York) traveled to White Haven, Pennsylvania, about a three hour trip from Sea Cliff, to go white water rafting. While there, the Boy Scouts camped out at a local campground. The weather generally held up until the last third of the rafting adventure (which was several hours long) at which time it started to pour, but neither the waves nor the rain could stop the Troop from their journey. The Troop wore wetsuits, which were rented from the rental center and prevented them getting wet and cold. We went down the Lehigh River, which had rapids causing the rafts and passengers to become airborne. Everyone in the troop had a really good time, from the newest Scouts to the adult leaders.

HONORING THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LAST FULL MEASURE OF DEVOTION

With the annual Sea Cliff Memorial Day parade and observance ceremony at Clifton Park cancelled this year as a result of forecasts for a severe storm, the young people who had been scheduled to participate in the ceremony were invited to the June Sea Cliff Village Board Meeting to perform their roles.  Phil Como, Commander of the Joseph F. Brengel American Legion Post 456, introducing them, said that the "patriotic fervor among young people in Sea Cliff has been exemplary."   Pictured above are Sea Cliff Elementary fourth graders Brendan Kenny and Veronica Frank who read their winning entries in the American Legion Post's essay contest, "What Memorial Day Means to Me."   Additionally, Sea Cliff Boy Scout Troop 43 presented the colors, and Sea Cliff Girl Scout Troops 22 and 42 sang "You're a Grand Old Flag."
