VILLAGE HONORS FIREMEN OF THE YEAR AND WELCOMES ROOKIES

At Monday's Seach Cliff Village Board meeting, SCFD 2nd Assistant Chief Michael Holquest, Firefighter Robert Murphy, former Chief James Ajamian, and Emergency Medical Technician Kira Watkins (not pictured) were recognized as Firemen of the Year for 2014.  Mayor Kennedy read a proclamation that described their quick response to a bicyclist who was stricken with a heart attack while riding along Glen Avenue this past October.  Their efforts helped to save the man's life and enable him to make a full recovery.  Also at Monday's Board Meeting, the Mayor swore in two new firefighters - residents Don Kavanaugh (Engine and Hose Co.) and Phil Como (Engine Co.).  Not present for the swearing in, but new to the department are Thomas Selleck (Hook and Ladder Company) and Dorian Rios-Butant (Engine & Hose Company.  

2015 SEA CLIFF LANDMARKS ASSOCIATION HOUSE TOUR

Sea Cliff, a former Methodist Campground Association founded in 1871 and known for its abundance Victorian houses is holding a house tour on Sunday, May 20 from 12 noon to 4:00 pm.  Seven homes ranging from Victorian cottages to a 1950’s “ Atomic Ranch," as well as the newly renovated 100 year old Stenson Memorial Library and Sea Cliff’s St. Seraphim church are on the self-guided tour.  Proceeds will help fund the Sea Cliff Landmarks Association’s historic survey and walkways restoration projects.

Tickets are now available at local realtor’s offices of Daniel Gale/Southeby's, 266 Sea Cliff Avenue and Sherlock Homes, 305 Sea Cliff Avenue.

FILMMAKERS HOST HAPPY PLANET EVENT TO PROMOTE  ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS

This past Saturday afternoon, the makers of the film El Nevado hosted a "Happy Planet Celebration" at Tappen Beach.  The event sought both to bring attention to the documentary and to advance the filmmakers' aim of promoting "the education and active participation in global issues like climate change by inspiring younger generations to use their imagination and resources to shift the balance in favor of sustainability of the human race."  READ MORE

On Tuesday May 19, residents of the North Shore School District will have the opportunity to vote on a $97,575,530 spending plan for the 2015-16 school year, representing a 1.8% increase over the current year's budget, and a tax levy of $89,580,349 - a 1.93% rise over this year, and $139,898 below the state imposed tax levy limit.  A second proposition asks residents to consider granting permission to the School Board to utilize existing funds not to exceed $3,146,154 from the capital reserve READ MORE

ASSEMBLYMAN RA TALKS EDUCATION, TAXES AND NEW ASSEMBLY LEADERSHIP AT GOLD COAST LIBRARY FORUM

Assemblyman Edward Ra (R - Franklin Square) who represents the  19th Assembly District which includes a large swath of the Glen Head/ Glenwood  Landing area, was at the Gold Coast Public Library on  April 29 to speak with residents about issues facing the area.  During the hour and a half event that was attended by about 20 constituents, the Assemblyman took questions on topics ranging from financial concerns such as teacher pensions costs , the demolition of the Glenwood Landing Power Plant and  tax rebates, to his thoughts on the changes that have taken place in the Assembly leadership.  Education reform, however, dominated the discussion, with the Assemblyman, who is the ranking Republican on the Assembly Education Committee, addressing questions regarding testing, the common core and the federal-state-school district relationship.   . TEAM NORTH SHORE SHATTERS RECORDS AT MS WALK 2015

On Sunday, May 3rd,  Team North Shore, with nearly 90 members, that included staff, students and their families,  geared up to participate in the annual Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Walk at Belmont Lake State Park. in West Babylon

It was a record showing for North Shore, said Sea Cliff Elementary School Teacher Marnie Schleifman, who along with Middle School Teacher Dan Chemnitz, led the Viking delegation.  “Not only was TEAM NORTH SHORE the largest team," she enthused, "but we shattered our records and goals raising over $17,000 for this important cause."  READ MORE

The works of Sea Cliff artists Kay Vickers and Lilli Scott will be exhibited at the Sea Cliff Library this May and June.  Works on display include a series of landscapes by Ms. Vickers entitled "Loving Landscapes; and eight pastels by Ms. Scott, called "Buon Cibo," or "Good Food."
