SEA CLIFF TO CELEBRATE STENSON LIBRARY CENTENNIAL SATURDAY

May 25, 2015 -- On May 13, 1915, with the Great War raging in Europe, and America's precarious neutrality shaken by a German U-boat's torpedoing of the British passenger liner Lusitania only six days earlier, in the summer resort village of Sea Cliff, the Stenson Memorial Library on Sea Cliff Avenue opened its doors for the first time to the public.  The Sea Cliff Village Library will be hosting a centennial celebration for the recently restored one story neo-classical structure this Saturday, May 30, 2015.  READ MORE

DISTRICT TO ADOPT NEW POLICY FOR STUDENT ATHLETES TO "PLAY UP"

May 25, 2015 -- At this past Thursday’s North Shore Board of Education meeting, the Trustees, Superintendent Dr. Edward Melnick, and Athletics Director Don Lang discussed changes to the New York State Department of Education’s Athletics "Selection Classification" policy which enables seventh and eighth graders who satisfy certain criteria to compete at the high school JV or Varsity levels.  The new state regulations make those requirements significantly more stringent.  Districts that choose to allow student athletes to “play up” must pass a resolution agreeing to adhere to the new procedures. READ MORE

Featured presenters are Bill Bleyer (of Newsday) and Harrison Hunt (historian), authors of the recently released book:  Long Island and the Civil War: Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk Counties During the War between the States.  READ MORE


RELAY FOR LIFE ON SATURDAY JUNE 6 AT NORTH SHORE HIGH SCHOOL

May 27, 2015 – After months of organizational meetings, forming community teams, and raising funds, Relay for Life North Shore 2015 will culminate next weekend, June 6 and 7, with a series of events at the High School. On Saturday evening, the main event, for which the fundraiser is named, will take place when participants, taking turns, walk the high school track throughout the night and into the next day - the oval ringed with luminarias lit in honor of friends and loved ones who have survived and in memory of those who have lost their battles with cancer.   The Opening Ceremony will begin at 7 pm and the Luminaria Lighting at 9. SEVEN NS HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES SIGN NATIONAL LETTERS OF INTENT

Director of Athletics Don Lang proudly announced that seven North Shore High School senior athletes signed National Letters of Intent (NLI). A Letter of Intent is a binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and an institution. Once signed, the institution agrees to provide that student with financial aid (if eligible under the NCAA rules) for one academic year in exchange for that student’s agreement to attend the institution for one academic year. Additionally, all colleges and universities that participate in the NLI program agree to not recruit these student athletes once he or she signs the NLI.  READ MORE


NS HIGH SCHOOL MATH FAIR MEDAL MANIA!

North Shore High School had another terrific year at the 2015 Long Island Math Fair, held at Hofstra University onFriday April 24. Thirty one students presented at the first round in February and 94% of them (29 students) received medals at the April 24 Final Round! (On average, 33%-50% of the students presenting at the first round of the Math Fair receive medals). READ MORE

NORTH SHORE DEFEATS PLAINEDGE TO EARN TRIP TO COUNTY FINALS

Thursday, May 28, 2015 -- The North Shore High School Varsity Baseball team earned a trip to the Nassau County finals by defeating Plainedge High School 5-3 this afternoon in the third game of a best of three series.  Today's victory culminated a spectacularly exciting week for the Vikings, that began last Thursday with a walk off win against Wantagh that enabled North Shore to make it into the semifinal round against Plainedge. (See articles below.)  The Vikings will take on Levittown Division in the finals that will be played at the Farmingdale State University campus on Saturday May 30 at 12 noon.

LATE GAME HEROICS LEAD TO 1-1 TIE IN COUNTY SEMIFINALS

May 27, 2015 - Thus far, the Nassau County Class A semifinals featuring the No. 3 Vikings of North Shore and the No. 7 Red Devils of Plainedge have been nothing short of spectacular. After two dramatic games, both decided in walk-off fashion, the series is now tied 1-1 and will be decided in a do-or-die Game 3 at 4:30 pm this Thursday at North Shore High School. READ MORE

May 24, 2015 -- As a result of a dramatic come-from-behind 3-2 victory on Thursday, the North Shore varsity baseball team has now secured a spot in the semifinals of the Class A Nassau County Tournament. The win came on a walk-off in the seventh inning against Warriors of Wantagh, just five days after the Vikings had beaten the same Wantagh team 2-1 on a walk-off hit in the first round of the playoffs.

SEA CLIFF OBSERVES MEMORIAL DAY 2015

Sea Cliff observed Memorial Day in traditional fashion this past Monday morning with a parade that began at Memorial Park and made its way to Clifton Park where local dignitaries spoke of the sacrifices made by those who have served this country in the armed forces and who gave their last full measure of devotion. The parade and ceremony were organized by the James F. Brengel American Legion Post. Sea Cliff School fourth graders Nathaniel Brower and Ruby "Scout" Kessler were winners of the annual "What Memorial Day Means to Me" essay contest. May 27, 2015 -- Author and artist Linda Vi Vona has contributed copies of her new book "Heroines" to the Glen Cove and Sea Cliff Public Libraries.  The book, which examines the creation of a group of sculptures celebrating six inspirational historical women figures, "was inspired by a desire to demonstrate an approach that might help artists, designers and others create multi media installations."   "Utilizing the latest digital methods and material, Heroines invites artists and designers to re-appropriate and incorporate the past into the present." SEA CLIFF SENIOR PICNIC ON JUNE 13

The Sea Cliff Senior Action Committee will hold its rain or shine annual Senior Picnic at 12 Noon on Saturday, June 13, at the Sea Cliff Methodist Church located at Downing and Carpenter Avenues. All seniors of the North Shore School District are invited. Hamburgers, hot dogs, fruit and salads, along with soft drinks will be served. The inimitable John Canning will MC the event along with music and sing-a-long songs by keyboardist, John LaRosa. The picnic is free and no tickets are required. 2015 MORGAN PARK SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL BEGINS JULY 5

The Morgan Park Summer Music festival will kick off its 56th Season of Sunday concerts with a performance of "Americana" by the North Shore Pops Concert Band on July 5. The music will continue each Sunday at 7:30 pm with acts varying from a Young Performers showcase, to a Johnny Cash tribute, to a performance of West Side Story.   Click here for the complete summer schedule.


MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF CHILDREN WITH AUTISM

This Spring, Jake Cirella, a 10th grader at North Shore High School, wanted to make a difference in the lives of children with autism. He took the initiative to help organize a fundraiser to help Autistic children learn how to ride bicycles. The event took place at Power Pals in Glen Cove benefitting the Nassau-Suffolk Autism Society. READ MORE
