WHY I AM RUNNING FOR SCHOOL BOARD

Received from Sara Jones,
Sea Cliff
April 17, 2016

To the Editor,

I would like to announce my candidacy for re-election to the North Shore Board of Education.  Through my experiences as a board member over the last three years, I have gained a great deal of insight about the workings of public education both on a local and national scale. I believe this experience makes me an even stronger candidate now than I was three years ago, and I hope to have the opportunity to put my knowledge and skills to work for the North Shore community for another term.  READ MORE

GROWING WITH YOUR GARDEN

Your garden should evolve, change and grow, just like we do as humans. Many a newbie starts with an aggressive agenda only to see their newly established beds over run with weeds and fall into ruin….. a garden casualty due to the limited amount of time or flexible knees each of us has. But there is a prudent and tested method to avoid this: start small and grow your gardens over time. READ MORE

SEA CLIFF BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE HOLDS SECOND ANNUAL SPRING FLING FUNDRAISER

April 17, 2016 -- Scores of residents turned out for the Sea Cliff Beautification Committee's second annual "Spring Fling" this past Friday evening at the Metropolitan Bistro. With Bill Long, owner of the restaurant, offering a delicious assortment of complimentary hors d'oeuvres, fling goers schmoozed and learned about the many services the Beautification Committee volunteers provide in preserving and enhancing the Village's natural beauty and charm.

41.6% OF NORTH SHORE STUDENTS BOYCOTT NEW YORK STATE MATH EXAMS

Picture
Picture
April 13, 2016 -- More than 400 North Shore students in grades 3-7 who were scheduled to sit for the Common Core math assessments opted out of the three day exam that began on Wednesday, said school district officials.  The Middle School grades had the highest number of opt outs, with just under 60% of 7th graders refusing the exam, but a significantly lower 37% of 6th graders doing so. Overall, nearly the same percentage, 41.6% of students, refused the Math exam as did the English Language Arts exam (42.5%) that was administered last week. The 8th grade, which had the highest opt out rate in the district for the ELA exam (54.4%), was not scheduled to take the Common Core Math assessment, since those students will, instead, sit for the Algebra Regents exam in June.  READ MORE
