SEEING THE WORLD FROM VINCENT GATTORNO'S VIEW AT THE SEA CLIFF PUBLIC LIBRARY

Picture
March 10, 2016 -- The Sea Cliff Public Library hosted an opening reception on Sunday, March 6 for Glen Cove photographer Vincent Gattorno’s exhibit  “A View.”   Mr. Gattorno’s photographs include a rich variety of subjects - some, a brief passing moment in time in the natural world, such as a blue leaf lying in the midst of an eye-popping potpourri of leaves in a Maine wood,  and others of man’s interaction with that world -  for instance a bleached beached boat wreck sitting among Cape Cod daisies on the Provincetown shoreline. Still others are of the beautiful geometry of the man made world - the glass dome of a cathedral seen from ground level or the rigging of a tall sailing ship viewed from an oblique angle. It is often the angle of the shot in Mr. Guattoro’s work that makes the seemingly ordinary extraordinary.  READ MORE

SOIL ...MORE THAN JUST DIRT?

The soil on your property is not limited to the clay, sand, minerals, rocks and organic debris that you commonly see but also holds a second component; the history of your land. What other variables could potentially impact the quality of your soil? Almost anything that has happened on your property. Common but harmless "finds" include glass, non-leaded ceramics, bones and shingles from slate roofs. Areas with high concentrations of other more toxic materials can include composition shingles, asbestos siding, furnace slag, coal, trash deposits of plastics, chemicals, oil, films, and batteries. . . WELCOME TO MAYOR SPINELLO'S ALTERNATE REALITY

Received from Roger Friedman
March 6, 2016

Welcome to Mayor Spinello’s Alternate Reality: In response to the article “Waterfront To Proceed As Planned,” [that appeared in the Glen Cove Record Pilot] many of the statements made by Mayor Spinello are either false grossly misleading. It seems that the Mayor is living in an alternate reality, but residents of Glen Cove deserve the truth. The Mayor states: “Despite the lawsuits, the waterfront project is moving forward as planned.” The Mayor cannot know if this project will move forward as the courts have not yet ruled. READ MORE

Vagrant birds—individuals occurring far beyond the expected geographical limits of their taxa—have fascinated people for centuries. Long dismissed as the stuff of mere sport and as biologically meaningless accidents, these records are emerging as a valuable dataset. Available in great detail via citizen science, records of rare birds are yielding insights into the causes and consequences of long-distance dispersal, the biological properties of local sites, the demographic trends of populations, the forces shaping community composition, and, ultimately, a more rational approach to conservation.
