RINGING OUT THE OLD, RINGING IN THE NEW IN SEA CLIFF

REVELRY ON THE VILLAGE GREEN

In what is becoming a local tradition, nearly two dozen villagers gathered at the John Burns Village Green in Sea Cliff at midnight on Thursday to bid farewell to 2014 and welcome the arrival of the New Year. At the stroke of twelve, Civic Association President Ann DiPietro tolled the bell 15 times, and then the revelers, in traditional fashion, broke into Auld Lang Syne, with John Hughes leading on guitar.

BLOOD DRIVE AT SEA CLIFF FIRE HOUSE ON MONDAY, JANUARY 5

Morgan Park Summer Music Festival (MPSMF) recently held a luncheon in honor of Marge Suozzi, who is stepping down after more than 50 years as MPSMF chairman. Marge will continue to serve on the Executive Committee as Chairman Emeritus and will organize the annual Young Performers Competition, which henceforth will be known as the Marguerite Suozzi Young Performers Talent Competition. NINE PLUNGE (BY CHOICE) INTO FRIGID SEA CLIFF BEACH WATERS

January 1, 2015 -- Undeterred by the sign warning "BEACH OFFICIALLY CLOSED - BATHING PROHIBITED," and with the air temperature hovering just above freezing, the wind chill at 22 degrees Fahrenheit and the water temperature at a relatively balmy 41, nine robust souls, all of sound mind, sprinted from the Sea Cliff Beach pavilion and plunged into Hempstead Harbor early Thursday afternoon. Sea Cliff resident Charlie Weinstein has organized the New Year's Day ritual for about 20 years now. First timer Greg Schondelmeier, 28, of Brooklyn, who is in town visiting with his girlfriend's family (but feeling absolutely no pressure to participate), said he had been in the frigid waters off the coast of New Zealand a couple of years ago, but believes these to be the coldest he has ever swum in. Despite the initial pain, which he described as a stinging like "being slapped," the experience he said was refreshing and exhilarating. "I will definitely do it again!" he declared.

MUTUAL CONCERNS CHRISTMAS DINNER SPREADS TWO DECADES OF HOLIDAY CHEER

December 30, 2014 -- More than 50 guests, ranging in age from young teens to senior citizens, some from nearby and others from as far away as Long Beach, turned out for good company, festive holiday entertainment and a turkey meal with all the trimmings at Mutual Concerns' annual Christmas Day Dinner. Begun 20 years ago by Sea Cliff resident Terry Sciubba, the event has not only attracted guests, but also many volunteers who have helped to prepare and serve meals, provide entertainment, operate a shuttle service bringing guests to the Church, and clean up. MEMORIAL FOR SEA CLIFF RESIDENT AND RENOWNED PHOTOGRAPHER ARTHUR LEIPZIG TO BE HELD ON JANUARY 10

A memorial service for Sea Cliff resident and renowned photographer Arthur Leipzig will be held at the Hillwood Recital Center at the Tilles Center for Performing Arts on the LIU - C.W. Post campus in Brookville on January 10 at 1 pm. Mr. Leipzig, who is perhaps best known for his photographs of ordinary people enjoying life in New York City during the 1940s, 50s and 60s, and who taught as an art professor at CW Post for more than two decades, passed away earlier this month at the age of 96. SING WE JOYOUS ALL TOGETHER, FA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA

About a dozen North Shore Middle School students spread holiday cheer wassailing in Sea Cliff this past Sunday evening. Sea Cliff parent Donna Kianka has been organizing the seasonal sing-alongs for several years now. Braving the December chill, the carolers surprised delighted residents with a repertoire ranging from classics, such as "Silent Night" and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas," to the more recent winter-time hit "Let It Go." The cold never bothered them anyway.
