LEARN TO CHA CHA, RUMBA, AND MAMBO AT THE DANZA CUBANA SOCIAL CLUB

On October 24, the North Shore Arts Angels and the High School Music Department will be hosting Danza Cubana Social Club, a Havana-style celebration of the North Shore High School Music Department's Student Performance Tour of Cuba this upcoming February school break.  90 students, teachers and chaperones, serving as cultural ambassadors, will travel to the island nation that had been closed to travel by Americans for more than 50 years.  While students' families will foot most of the bill for the experience, Arts Angels and the music program are seeking to defray some of the extra expenses this particular tour and to help support students who are unable to cover the full cost.   The October 24th fundraiser, which will take place at the Glenwood Landing American Legion Hall on Glen Head Road from  7:30 to 10 pm, will feature a DJ, Live Music and performances, as well as instruction for those interested in learning to Rumba, Cha Cha and Mambo.  Tickets are $25 for Adults and $15 for students.  There will be a cash bar and snacks available.  Proceeds will help cover the extra expense of providing this extraordinary arts education opportunity.  For tickets and sponsor information go to the Arts Angels website at www.northshoreartsangels.org or call 516 945 9910.  CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION

STAR LIGHT STAR BRIGHT FIRST STAR I SEE TONIGHT

​Under a chilly but clear autumn sky, a great crowd, perhaps 75 or more, gathered at Clifton Park this past Sunday evening for the Sea Cliff Civic Association's Starry Starry Night.  The student stargazers, after receiving a lesson in the constellations and other celestial sites from a representative of the Amateur Observers' Society of New York, rotating among a dozen or so telescopes, viewed close-ups of the moon and other astral attractions while the "The Milky Ways," a duet featuring Sea Cliff residents Heidi Hunt and Joe Hughes, in a stellar performance, strummed and sang out- of-this-world selections including Elton John's Rocket Man, David Bowie's Starman, and the Indigo Girls' Galileo.   "Starry Starry Night was an over the moon experience for all of us," said Sea Cliff Civic Association President Ann DiPietro.  "And never  was  Clifton Park host to such an array of stellar luminaries."

OFFICIALS DELIVER GOOD NEWS REGARDING POWER PLANT TAX SHIFT; ADDRESS VARIETY OF ISSUES AT NS LAC LEGISLATIVE FORUM

October 19, 2015 -- The demolition of the Glenwood Landing power plant is very unlikely to have a significant impact on residents’ tax bills going forward said area legislators who spoke at a forum sponsored by the North Shore Legislative Action Committee (LAC) at the North Shore High School Theater last Tuesday evening.   About 150  area residents turned out for LAC’s first ever Legislative Night with State Senator Carl Marcellino, Assemblymen Charles Lavine, Michael Montesano, and Edward Ra, as well as County Legislator Delia Deriggi Whitton answering questions posed by audience members and delivered by the moderator, School Board President Dr. Herman Berliner. NORTH SHORE HOMECOMING

A HOMECOMING WITH HORNED HELMETS

With the autumn sun streaming and the temperature refreshingly brisk, a deluge of maroon and white, dotted with the occasional horned helmet, made its way from Glenwood Elementary School along the one mile parade route to the High School this past Saturday morning, as the North Shore School District kicked off its annual Homecoming celebration.   Vikings of all ages then drifted off to take in performances by student bands, or to navigate an obstacle course, play some pick up football, compete in the Middle School Color Games or race in a 100 yard dash.  By 2 pm, the stands were packed, and with the cheerleaders, pulse team, pep band, and the outstanding play of the North Shore football team rousing the crowd, the Vikings capped a spectacular day with a 32 to 7 rout of Southside.

October 20, 2015 --With a strong defensive performance and an offensive onslaught  led by Quarterback Ryan Aughavin and running back Antonio Evangelista, the North Shore Football Vikings lived up to Homecoming expectations this past Saturday afternoon with a rout of the South Side Cyclones.  The home team established control early in the game, when after stopping the Cyclones on its first three downs, junior Nick Liotta rushed through the right side of the defensive line, and with a fully outstretched dive, blocked the Southside punt, giving North Shore great field position for its first possessions.  READ MORE

​PINK OUT ON SATURDAY

​In recogition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the North Shore Varsity Football team will play a "Pink Out" game this Saturday, October 24.  On sale for $15 will be North Shore Football "Pink Out" t-shirts.  All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life program to support cancer patients, their caregivers, and cancer research.  This year, Josh Mandell, a player on the Varsity team, is  a Chairperson for North Shore Relay for Life.  In this, the last home game of the season, the Vikings will be taking on Valley Stream North at 2 pm. Wear pink and support the team!

EXCESS COSTUMES SOLD TO RAISE FUNDS FOR DISTRICT THEATER PROGRAMS

Savvy shoppers picked up great Halloween bargains and had fun dressing up last Saturday at the Halloween Costume Sale at North Shore High School, an event organized by North Shore Arts Angels, the district's booster club for the arts.  A typical customer spent about $15 and over $3,500 was raised by the sale of excess costume and prop items, according to Julia Brennan, who coordinated the sale for Arts Angels. Another $2,000 was expected in rental credits for unsold items that will be donated to the non-profit Theater Development Fund's (TDF) Costume Collection, a NYC-based program that provides low-cost rentals to schools and community groups, Mrs. Brennan said.  READ MORE

Congratulations North Shore Students! Principal, Albert Cousins of North Shore High School recently announced that 13 students were named National Merit Commended Students in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program. They placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2016 competition by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test. 34,000 commended students are being recognized for their exceptional academic progress. READ MORE

2015 PUMPKIN PATCH FUNDRAISER AT THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF SC

The pumpkin patch is back!  The Methodist Church of Sea Cliff will be hosting its 12th annual fall fundraiser from October 2 through October 31. ​The Sea Cliff Arts Council proudly presents its third annual "Chill Out in Sea Cliff" on Friday, November 6th, 2015. Everyone is invited to attend this Sea Cliff community event to celebrate and promote our local businesses, musicians, and artists. The evening commences at 6 p.m. on the Village Green (in front of Sea Cliff Library) with music by Frank Ferrara and Friends. Some shops will be open late. Stop by the pubs and restaurants of Sea Cliff with musical entertainment starting at 8:30 pm. We will be collecting food donations on the Village Green, on behalf of Mutual Concerns of Sea Cliff. It will be a great night out on the town!
