Viking Foundation Spring Gala Honoring Superintendent Dr. Ed Melnick at the Engineers Club, Thursday, March 30, 2017
The Viking Foundation is proud to announce its Spring Gala event honoring Dr. Edward Melnick, retiring Superintendent of North Shore Schools. The Spring Gala will be held on March 30th, 2017 at the Engineers Country Club in Roslyn Harbor, New York. Superintendent Dr. Melnick said, “It has been an honor and a privilege to work for the North Shore School District, where the faculty, staff, administration, and parents are so committed to excellence.” He has served the North Shore School District with distinction for 30 years. Dr. Melnick was appointed superintendent in 2003. Under his leadership, the District became known as one of Long Island’s “high performing” districts where families are proud to educate their children. North Shore High School now has one of the highest graduation and college attendance rates in the district’s history, recognized by the NY State Department of Education and ranked by Newsweek as “America’s Top High Schools” in 2015. In 2016, North Shore Middle School was recognized as a “National Model School to Watch.” Dr. Melnick led the district to focus on all aspects of child and adolescent development. He supported a growing arts program, implemented foreign language in the elementary schools, and led the district to build an athletic program that supports scholar athletes and champion teams. “We are more than grateful for Dr. Melnick’s service to the district, and are proud of what he has accomplished,” said Carol Remy, co-chair of the Viking Foundation. Dr. Perry Frankel, board member to the Viking Foundation and financial supporter of the organization said, “We moved to this district because of the commitment of the administration and faculty to students’ success. That vision was set by Dr. Melnick.” In addition to leading the district to excellence, Dr. Melnick also led North Shore to financial stability. Since 2012, the district has complied with the NY State 2% tax levy cap on tax increases. During that time, he not only developed budgets that met this criteria, he was also an active supporter of the Viking Foundation, helping to raise private funds to supplement the district’s budget.
