TRAVELING MUSEUM EXHIBITION ON THE PROGRESSIVE ERA VISITS NS MIDDLE SCHOOL
Traveling Museum Exhibition on the Progressive Era Visits NS Middle School
Creating Modern America 1900 - 1917 This Fall 2016, Social Studies Teacher Christopher Gill applied for a grant for North Shore Middle School through the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Thanks to all of his efforts, North Shore Middle School was successfully chosen as an Affiliate School and as a part of this program was able to receive a traveling museum exhibit featuring The Progressive Era: Creating Modern America 1900-1917. The Affiliate School Program provides an gateway to educational resources, events, and tools designed to bring American history to life in the classroom.* Mr. Gill is also a Master Teacher through the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and helps run summer seminars at colleges and universities across the country. In December 2016, the traveling Progressive Era exhibit came to the middle school featuring numerous presentation boards that visually displayed photographs, illustrations, cartoons, and letters illustrating America’s transformation into a more modern, industrial society. Mr. Gill said, “My eighth graders were studying how the abuses of the Gilded Age helped spark the need for progressive reforms. They were able to see the traveling exhibit in our school library and analyze primary and secondary documents. In addition, they further collaborated to judge to what degree the Progressive Era changed our country.” Mr. Gill added, “We also had a role playing activity where the students acted as a member of my Presidential transition team. My Students had to advise me (the next president!) of what the most important reform was and why I should keep it during my administration.” Many thanks to Mr. Christopher Gill and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History for enabling this hands-on educational exhibit to visit North Shore Middle School.
