To the Editor,
I am writing to endorse Joanna Commander for re-election to the North Shore Board of Education. Ms. Commander has been an outstanding addition to the Board over the past three years. Her wealth of knowledge and passion has been beneficial especially in matters close to her areas of expertise, which include interscholastic athletics, health issues and substance abuse.
Throughout Joanna’s forty years of service to multiple schools within the area, she has fulfilled the role of a teacher, a coach, and an athletic director. Joanna has expanded her experience further by moving into similar positions at both Adelphi and Hofstra Universities. In my opinion, she is currently one of the most experienced members of our community to seek a seat on the board as it pertains to Interscholastic Athletics as well as Health and Wellness. Joanna serves as the boards expert on these matters (Athletics, Health and Wellness) and I have personally seen both the superintendent and various other board members elicit her counsel on such matters at Board meetings. Ms. Commander was instrumental in the districts comprehensive Athletic Review and continues to be regarded as a critical part of North Shore’s community. She supports not only the athletes of this district, but additionally sits in on many other Board committees including the District Policy, IEP review and Construction committees.
With the current climate of opiate abuse in our nation, Ms. Commander has been involved in the establishment of the North Shore Coalition Against Substance Abuse. This group of parents, school officials, students, and community members are trying to establish a strategy to combat substance abuse in our community. As a parent of a student in the district, I believe it is extremely important to have a role model such as Ms. Commander involved in such an important and detrimental issue.
As a community, we are very fortunate to have a candidate with the knowledge, experience, and genuine care that Ms. Commander is willing to offer. Please consider voting for Joanna Commander for re-election on May 16th.
