SEA CLIFF LOVES ITS VILLAGE LIBRARY

Books were flying off the shelves at the Friends of the Sea Cliff Library “Giant Gently Used Book Sales,” at “Garage Day Sale” on Saturday, June 5, 2016. The book sale is a major fundraiser and community event where people come to share their love of the library, reading, and books and spend time with their friends. Many hundreds of books, DVDs and CDs are donated and sold. The great success of the book sale is one more indicator of the love the Village has for the library. Numerous people volunteered hours of work to make the sale succeed. Volunteers included Carol Berglie, Peggy Brucia, Jim Campbell, Rosemary Chu, Wendy D’Avino, Joanna Greenspon, Gwen Lennon, Jeanne Millspaugh, Barbara Murray, Robbie Nuttall, Panaput, Catherine Pickering, Carol Poll, Lilli Scott, Janet Swinburne, her niece Nancy Profera, and Carolyn Quenon. A hearty thanks also goes to the Director of the Library, Arlene Nevins, and the library staff who helped us and stored the books for us before the sale. The North Shore Key Club and the North Shore High School provided essential help setting up the book sale. North Shore students who helped were James Mastakouris and Michael Albanese. Julia Salat, the faculty advisor of the Key Club of North Shore High School does an outstanding job recruiting students to help us at this very busy time of the school term. Special mention goes to the North Shore Middle School Community Project organized by the student Henry Purcell and included Christine Watkins, Matthew Marches, and Aiden Janusas. These community minded middle school students were lifting and sorting boxes in the early morning set-up. The Sea Cliff Troop 43 Boy Scouts of St. Luke’s Church is crucial to the sale by helping us bring in the remaining books. We count on the Troup 43’s indispensable help. Boy Scouts ,John Channell, Kyle Soscie, Brady Wagner and little brother, Erik Wagner , worked quickly and carefully. Troop 43 leaders Pegeen Channell, Dean Wagner and Kim Soscie were the caring parents who also pitched in carrying and organizing the remaining books. The Troop meets on Monday night at 7:30 at St. Luke’s Church and always welcomes new members. Their website is http://www.seaclifftroop43.org/#! Some of the leftover books are distributed to local community charities, Glen Cove Hospital and others are sent to Better World Books, a charitable organization supporting worldwide literacy. In addition, we want to thank, Ann DiPietro, and the Sea Cliff Civic Association Garage Sale Committee for giving us garage day sale maps to sell that day and allow us to keep the money from the sale. But most of all the group we want to thank is the Sea Cliff community. It is the Sea Cliff community who gives us the wonderful gently used books to sell and every year turns out to buy them. The Friends of the Sea Cliff Library is a non-profit group committed to advocacy and support of the library. Money raised by the Friends is used to benefit the library such as contributing thousands of dollars towards the remodeling of the Children’s Library, providing museum passes, IPads and many other items. New members are always welcome at monthly meetings. Further information is available in the Library.
