CELEBRATING INDEPENDENCE IN SEA CLIFF
July 1, 2014 -- Sea Cliff will be observing the nation's 238th Birthday in a variety of ways this upcoming Thursday and Friday.
The Children's Library will host a Happy Birthday USA party on its front lawn on Sea Cliff Avenue on Thursday, July 3 at 6 pm. Sea Cliff resident and crooner/guitarist Joe Hughes will lead participants in a few patriotic numbers before ending with "Happy Birthday" and enjoying a big cake with candles. At 10 a.m. on Friday, July 4, on the Village Green, the Sea Cliff Civic Association will be holding its 22nd annual Fourth of July Celebration, which will feature the reading of the Declaration of Independence, as had been done at village greens and squares across the 13 independent states in July 1776, followed by the ringing of the Village bell. Sea Cliff first observed Independence Day in this manner in 1993, when the event was held at Geohagen Park. In 2002, the venue was changed to its current location and the celebration took its present form, which in addition to the reading of Jefferson's immortal words, includes music, playlets, and refreshments. Afterwards, this year, celebrants will then make their way along Sea Cliff Avenue, led by Sea Cliff bagpiper Paul Haining to the northeast corner of Roslyn Avenue where the refurbished area formerly known as Mini Plaza will be re-dedicated Lincoln Plaza. There, our sixteenth president, as portrayed by Sea Cliff Native Don Mullen, will address his fellow Americans about the value of liberty and the ongoing importance of civic participation. Later that day, at 7:30 pm, the Northwinds Symphonic Band will perform a concert at Glen Cove's Morgan Memorial Park, followed by a fireworks show sponsored by Grucci at 9 pm - the Sea Cliff shoreline offering a perfect vantage point for viewing.
